I wanted to share with you all my magnetic squadron bases that I just did tonight. I used 2 1/8'' magnets, actually, I ended up with a 3rd for storage reasons. As for the construction, I used a 1/8'' drill on the base, glued the magnet from the bottom and made sure it was flush with the top of the base. Then I used a pair of cutting pliers to cut the peg and about 1/8'' of the stem on the peg. Basically I wanted to make it such that the cardboard dial was snug between the peg and the stand. From there just a bit of sanding to rough up the surface and then glued the magnet on to the peg. Voila. After figuring it all out on the first one, I did the subsequent 7 in about 30min or so. I'll probably do another batch of 8 this weekend and leave it at 16 total since that's all I carry with me anyways. As I stated though, I found that putting an extra magnet on the underside of the base helps with the storage. The extra magnet doesn't interfere with the bottom of the base, but allows each base to be attracted to each other. As such, when I pull them out of their horizontal storage row, the remaining ones don't fall down and take the empty space. A nice side effect.
I have my first game with them tomorrow night, but based on the trial runs, I don't expect any issues.
