Supposedly the the character was called Nick Sant in the old canon but that it's just a ****** Santa Claus pun. It makes way more sense for it to be Rex.

Everybody thinks the old veteran is rex. Wether Disney does or not I don't care, I believe it's rex. It's just too awesome not to be.
