Win Condition and List Building

By NeonWolf, in Star Wars: Legion

Now that we know what the Win Conditions are for regular play, which may or may not change for tournament play, how do we see this impacting list building?

If you go with the Multiple Small Units (MSU) method (base unit with no/minimal upgrades) then you have more Unit Leaders for objective scoring, and all 4 of the objectives so far revolve around unit leaders being how you score Victory Tokens, which is how you win the game. The downside to this is that your Unit Leaders have less troopers in the unit to soak up wounds before they are eliminated.

If you go with the full unit method (additional trooper, heavy weapon trooper, variable upgrades) then you improve the survivability of your units and Unit Leaders, but you potentially have less unit leaders on the board with which to score Victory Tokens.

The other considerations are the tie breakers if both players have the same number of Victory Tokens. First is the point value of enemy units and upgrades you've destroyed. If this is still a tie then the Blue Player wins. Since the player that has the smaller point value at the start of the game gets to choose to be the Blue Player or Red Player, this means that having a smaller point total (Initiative Bid) can theoretically win you the game.

I find it interesting you can win by destroying the opponents army, since Alex Davy had said it's objective based. This got me thinking the best way to win is to take 6 troops, cap the objectives with 5 of them, and have 1 sitting in the corner just in case you get tabled. You'll win if you have more victory tokens.

Theoretically, you can do this in Armada...in practice it's more difficult...you know, because the other guy at the table doesn't want you too.

I'm not sure the "Ender in the Corner" method is the best way to guarantee a win since your opponent could still have destroyed more points worth of your units than you destroyed of theirs. Also, it is an objective based game, none of the Objective Cards award Victory Tokens for defeating enemy units. If I remember correctly, one is or number of unit leaders in objective terrain, one is for number of unit leaders near objective tokens, one is for number of claimed objectives (which can only be claimed by Trooper unit leaders), and the last is for unit leaders in the enemy deployment zone.

It's hard to win like that because you win via points earned and destroyed, not victory tokens earned. If you have a flotilla in the corner and nothing else, you probably lost 380+ points.

Right, so even if I get 6 victory tokens and you get 5, you can destroy my entire army except the guy in the corner and I still win.

  • If all of one player’s units are defeated, that player is eliminated from the game, and their opponent is the winner.
  • If neither player is eliminated after six game rounds, the game ends and the player with the most victory tokens is the winner.

I'm not sure what the objectives are so I'm not sure how valid this strategy is.

9/10 you’re gonna win by VP. From the games I’ve played on TTS it seems very difficult to win by elimination unless your opponent is playing very poorly.

Your opponent is going to be trying to cap those objectives too but if you have one sitting in the corner he is doing it with 40 more points of units than you.

I think if you are going to do a berserker for tokens strategy you should use your whole army and plan to have one unit fall back to prevent tabling.

I also only see this strategy being very effective with the "recover the supplies" objective and possibly manageable with "intercept the transmissions." With the other two if you only have one unit on the table you've probably lost.

Dead troops don't cap objectives. Much more interesting is terrain. AT-STs rule in open terrain, Fleet Troopers in dense terrain. As it will be difficult to organise enough terrain for tournaments, my money is on vehicles.
