Jostero vs Harpooned timing?

By emeraldbeacon, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Here's a strange scenario question that came up in a furball lately...

A bomb explodes, dealing damage to two ships. One of the ships has the Harpooned condition, and the bomb was the final hull point on the ship (destroying it). The other ship happens to be inside Captain Jostero's arc. The question is... what happens first? Does Jostero get his shot before Harpooned goes off, or does the Harpooned effect happen before Jostero shoots? Or is it based on initiative? (In a furball, it could matter for who gets the "kill.")

The rules don't cover this timing issue because more than two players and kill responsibility aren't part of them. Rule it however seems fairest. Personally I'd flip a coin.

There are no coins in X-wing. Roll an attack die, one player calling hits/crits.

sorry, feeling silly today.

I would say Jostero’s ability kicks in first since it states specifically states it died after the ship suffers damage, this instance being bomb damage. Unless the first ship is ‘immediately’ destroyed by the bomb which triggers the condition, but the bomb damage always comes first so the second ship is already damaged....so yeah I dunno.

I guess that’s why I don’t play fur ball.

It is initiative. There is two triggers that happen at the same time. So if Jostero player as the initiative, he get to shoot first then the Harpooned condition resolve. If the Harpooned ship have the initiative, it happen first. Then Jostero can shoot. If the Harpooned ship and the Jostero ship are the same owner, he choose the order.

Folks are right in saying initiative. In general, the opportunity to trigger an effect depends only on initiative.* The player with initiative resolves all their effects in order, then the next player resolves theirs.

I guess for Furball, you'll need a full list of initiative.

William > Geordi > Jean-Luc > Guinan > Data, or such. Maybe that's determined by bids, maybe by one person getting initiative, and the rest being placed in the order based on where they've sat at the table, or whatever.

* After attacking/defending abilities which perform attacks are paused until all non-attack abilities which happen after attacking/defending. However, that's not relevant to Jostero and bombs.

Well, furball just got initiative rules. There goes the neighborhood. Thanks again Harpoon Missiles, anything else you wanna screw up?

I mean, there kinda had to be initiative rules of some kind, since there's probably some pilot skill overlap.

Personally, I'm kinda fine with poker table initiative. It passes to the player on your left.

In furballs, I find a houserule of "Initiative passes clockwise each turn" makes for less bu77hurt a more balanced game.

<edit> wait, I can't say BU77HURT!? What kind if kindergarten bullcrap is this? Fine, creative edit accepted.
