What other Era Sourcebooks will we see?

By Bojanglez, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Was thinking about this earlier today (as I sit and wait for my DoR to arrive) and I was curious where FFG will go with this next.

  • It feels too soon to get one for the ST (would seem more likely after Episode 9 is out)
  • The Clone Wars seems like a no-brainer, even if FFG have mostly kept away from the prequels
  • As The Old Republic is no longer canon, that might be a stretch

Which other Eras are there that would make good sourcebook material?

Well we haven't seen the obligatory Tatooine book yet...

I think we will get the Clone Wars era book around Christmas or early next year. Then we might get an era book covering the original movie trilogy and the upcoming Solo movie. The era book covering the sequel movie trilogy might be published Christmas 2020.

The way Disney has been doing things, my bold prediction is that they’ll cancel any prequel books that FFG would wish to make. Obviously, anything Old Republic is Legends, so they’d also not let FFG do that. Sequel trilogy could get a book or two, though.

They own the rights to the prequels, why wouldn’t they use that period?

The Prequels had a healthy audience, and the Clone Wars did too.

Because those were "bad" movies and Dis/LFL marketing don't want you thinking about them when the next movie comes out. Can't have you thinking EPIX is going to be about Senate committee hearings on trade and romantic discussions about the negative aspects of sand.

That doesn’t mean a roleplaying game set in the clone wars time period wouldn’t be awesome.

Except that JJ Abrams said the next film will tie together all nine movies; can't do that without reminding folks of Ep 1-3...

I expect we'll get a "First Order/Resistance" Era book, but probably not until the 9th film is released.

They do seem to be coming around now that 7, 8, and R1 all worked out. I too would like a prequel book.

We'll see.

My guess is a Clone Wars era book will be next if they do another “Era” book.

I could only see them doing a Clone Wars book and Sequel trilogy. No way are Disney going to let them touch any time period beyond the scope of the films.

But it would also let them do a 'proper' Jedi book, which people have been crying about ever since EotE was announced. Even F&D had people complaining it's about them being taught how to use the Force, but without the fancy labels and trappings of the 'real' Jedi.

The fact is, regardless to what all logic would say, Disney seems to find the prequels taboo. They killed Clone Wars and have entirely abandoned the era.

They are publishing a lot of comics about the prequel area so I doubt they "abandonned" it.

LOL... okaaayyy. Let’s see we have had multiple Prequel era comics from Marvel, including the current Vader series which takes place right after Revenge of the Sith. The one book that remained in the New York Times Best Seller list the longest was a Prequel era book (“Ashoka”). They just added a crap ton of Clone Wars content to EAs Battlefront after fans complained. There’s a Padme novel coming soon, the Rebels TV series has constant Prequel references... but yeah they find the era taboo.

BTW the Clone Wars series was killed for two reasons:

1) While LFL owned the series they had a contract with WB for the show to air on Cartoon Network. Disney would not funnel monies for a show on a rival network.

2) Clone Wars was ludicrously expensive, and Lucas paid for the quality of the production out of his own pocket. Because of the advances in technology the show was pushing (at Lucas’ request) some episodes cost multiple millions of dollars. For example early in the series the show was limited in the amount of objects on screen at one time. Season 2 began with an arc returning to Geonosis. Lucas wanted the visuals to rival the movies, requiring the show to develop resources and advances in the computer rendering they were using. It’s rumored the 3 episode Geonosis arc ran almost $5 million an episode. Disney was never going to pay that kind of money and the production values on Rebels demonstrate that.

But but hating on the house of mouse and blaming them is all the rage these days...

There is a comic series about Mace Windu coming soon also.

Back to the actual question: There aren't many more eras apart from the ones that you've mentioned, and I doubt FFG would be bold enough (or even be allowed) to make their own history entries. The only one not mentioned or covered yet is the tiny bit of actual New Republic existence between episodes VI and VII.

If by “coming soon,” you mean “all five issues are available, with the mini-series ending in December, 2017,” yeah, it’s coming soon. ?

Sorry, I read them in french so, for me, it is coming soon. :)

Though, with Luke having a crystal in his quarters on Ach-To that came from the Old Republic era, they might start to look at the era itself to be canonical, even if not everything in it is.

I’ve got a bad feeling about this... ;)

Fair enough. :)

It came and went and was exceptionally mediocre but it was definitely prequel stuff (as was the “Obi-Wan and Anakin” series).

Agree 100%.

Somone mentioned a book to cover Solo and the OT but that is basically DoR, so maybe there is the NR period you defined.

i know FFG got to create the Imperial Raider for X-Wing and basically create their own canon, not sure if they would be empowered to create an entirely new canonical era

Since I'm indifferent to anything but the Old Republic Era. I'm gonna say they should totally do Old Republic Era. There's a market for it and the mouse is all about making it rain all the green.
