Pet stats

By DJCrazee, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Aside from the Beast Rider using mounts(which I plan for this character and/or Force Bonded) is there any way to have, say, a couple hunting hound like companions(Geonosian Massifs maybe?) and a Kowakian Monkey-Lizard as pets for a character?

Ideally, I would like for my "beastmaster" Sathari character to have a mount(haven't decided what to ride yet), a couple pet hounds, and a Monkey-Lizard who rides on his shoulder and engages in fights alongside him(if at all possible). If it is possible I'd like to have the monkey-lizard armed with a scattergun of some sort.

Worst case scenario I'm willing to use droid stats to represent the monkey-lizard since he is partially cybernetic as per the character's backstory(cybernetic leg, arm and eye).

Any suggestions? Is this even possible?

According to the rules, pets should be “relatively small non-combatants,” who are really only there as storytelling tools, rather than mechanical help. Obviously, it shouldn’t get in the way of fun. (While it probably wasn’t the finest case of my signature Laissez-Faire GMing, I once let a PC have a small pet who was a droid with a personal stealth field and basic slicing abilities) If you’re willing to let the pet get some stats, I would maybe make the player spend credits/XP to even things out mechanically.

As for stats, I know a thing or two about Kowakian Monkey Lizards from my Complete Species Guide. This is what PC Kowakian Monkey Lizards get for starting stats:

Agility 3, Cunning 3, Brawn 1, Intellect 1
WT 6, ST 10
110 XP
1 rank in Survival
Foragers: Receive the talent “Forager.”
Excellent Stomachs: Suffer no penalties for eating spoiled or rotten food.
Primitive: Upgrade the difficulty of any checks involving advanced technology. This counts as any technology not available on their home planet, although individual pieces of technology they become familiar with over an extended period of time can become exempt from this at the GM's discretion. May spend 10 XP at character creation to remove this penalty permanently.
Silhouette 0

Obviously, I would cut a lot of the XP out, as, again, balancing reasons. Maybe add a few more skills, talents, or abilities based on what makes narrative sense.

As for the hounds, (akk dogs would be a Star Wars equivalent) you need a Nuclear Power Plant Owner Specialization.

I "think" they appear in friends like these but I can't remember the details

Beware GMPCs, you seem to be falling into the same trap I did circa 1992.

This is for a different game, in which I'll be playing. The GMPC idea was dropped from my campaign.

Sorry for my mistaken assumption, carry on

Generally a “pet” or “mount” requires a manoeuvre to be spent to direct it in a round, otherwise it does nothing of significance to the scene.

Having a minion group of pets at my table would be treated as a single individual as far as giving them direction.

So your character would have three separate followers to direct, more than you have manoeuvres. One option would be for you to give up your action to make a Survival check to direct them all.

But my biggest problem would simply be with slowing down the game, you would have 4 different things to handle on your turn, potentially with 3 to 4 skill checks, that’s excessive. I would therefore direct you to the AoR gm kit and the Squad rules, use those for the hounds, the mount would be a sometimes only thing, whilst the monkey is your real “pet” who does stuff on your turn regularly.

Try to find a way to be cool without bogging down the game.

If you're looking for creature stats to use there's a really nice unofficial fan sourcebook PDF that acts as a bestiary for dozens of Star Wars creatures, though it doesn't seem to have a Kowakian Monkey-Lizard or Massif in it. There seem to be loading issues with a lot of the pages right off the link there so you should probably download it so you would get the whole thing.

I'd say that mountable or not there should be a means of training tamed, domesticated, and creatures raised from youth so that controlling a creature to do X, Y, Z in combat and other situations can go from actions requiring a survival check to maneuvers requiring no check at all and eventually incidentals with enough time spent training, while the creature as a separate entity would then do whatever action the player orders it to do whenever it's turn comes up in combat or outside of it at the GM's discretion. This would also keep things balanced by making having and controlling creatures particularly from youth take a significant time investment especially when one is trying to train entire groups of them. Much like how training a creature to be ridden works in the Seeker book I'd go with an average survival check and a time at least 4 weeks time per creature, decreasing the time by a week each 2 adv and reversing for threats and despair, while decreasing the time by a week for each level in domesticatable the creature comes with. Maybe throw in some more involved orders one could choose to train into a creature specifically, like training them to incapacitate and restrain opponents which would make it's attacks affect strain instead of cause wounds, or make it better at avoiding being hit when being attacked by an opponent.

I'll most likely be making the monkey-lizard an NPC as an ally to the Sathari character.

Thanks for all the advice and links, they've helped immensely.

Now I'm just stuck deciding what I'd like to use as his mount, since it'll essentially be a non-combatant and operate mainly as a "vehicle". As for the hounds, I'll be going with 2 force bonded Albeks since they're extremely close to Geonosian Massifs in appearance and are about exactly what I was going for.
