Sunny vs Sensor Jammer

By dotswarlock, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Here is a little scenario:

Sunny rolls 2 natural hits against a Ghost equipped with Sensor Jammer. Normally, the defender modifies the dice first. However, when reading Sunny's ability from the FAQ, we find this:

"Sunny Bounder's ability triggers before the effect of Heavy Laser Cannon resolves."

Since a heavy laser cannon triggers before Sensor jammer (which means a naturally rolled crit can be transformed into a hit by the HLC and into a focus by sensor jammer), am I correct in assuming that even though the Ghost can change one of Sunny's hit into a focus, that her ability was still triggered and that she can therefore still add a hit result to her roll?

The argument could also be made that even if the timing is different, 2 hits were indeed rolled (and later transformed into a hit and focus) and that therefore, the ability was triggered anyway?

The Ghost is really popular of late, so I might as well clarify that up before I start experimenting with Sunny.

Given the FAQ, Sunny Bounder's ability triggers in some imaginary state that exists between "rolling the dice" and "after rolling the dice", so it would definitely trigger before the defender can modify dice including the use of Sensor Jammer.

@joeshmoe554 is correct.

A good thing to also remember: 0 is a valid number. This means if you roll a hit and a focus result you can, after sensor jammer changes your dice to two focus results, spend your target lock to reroll zero dice. After you reroll zero dice you'll be able to trigger "after you [...] reroll dice, if you have the same result on each of your dice, you may add 1 matching result" in order to have three focus results. This is, of course, only good if you also have a focus token - which is tricky due to both Hotshot Copilot on Fenn (not that he's likely to target Sunny) and the lack of action economy on Sunny. This "trick" also works when you happen to roll two natural critical hit results: spend your target lock to reroll 0 dice and add a matching (critical hit) result!

Yup Sunny trigger before Sensor Jammer.

Why would opponent use Sensor Jammer then as he would only be disadvantaged by it's use?

Because they didn’t think it through? They won’t do it twice for sure.

Because it doesn't matter and they're not disadvantaging themselves... If they choose not to use sensor jammer:

  1. You roll focus and hit.
  2. Your opponent declines to use sensor jammer.
  3. You spend your focus token to modify your dice to two hit results.
  4. You spend your target lock to reroll zero dice.
  5. You trigger Sunny's ability to add a third hit result.

In either situation Sunny still ended the attack step with 3 hit results, might as well use sensor jammer...it changes nothing, but you got to do a thing.

Well yeah. I was thinking if you rolled hit focus and they used SJ.
