Hostile Negotiations

By totalnoob, in Imperial Assault Campaign

I have run 3+ campaigns and pretty much just stick to the campaign guide for deployments , setup, story, etc. I’m just not that creative or smart to pull it off. :)

However, I am really tempted to change the hostile negotiations mission in JR. Rather than using the generic mercenary in the mission story who is working with the rebels, to haul the goods - I am thinking of changing that character (Kar is his name) to be Han Solo instead. He was a smuggler working at one time with Jabba, I just feel like this campaign is screaming for Han to be a part of it somehow.

I think I am going to let them control Han as an ally and maybe give myself 6 threat (2x current threat level). I know this will be harder for me, but that’s perfectly fine - the win conditions are fairly balanaced anyway on this mission, so I thought adding Han as an ally and the one working with the rebels would be a lot of fun and very thematic.

thoughts?

Brilliant idea! I love it! I did not play that mission yet so I cannot really give you advice regarding balance. 6 threat (instead of 12) seems at first, very few to compensate, but original Solo (assuming you are not playing with the skirmish upgrade) can fall quite fast if you concentrate fire on him, especially if the white die does not like the rebels. Anyway, I'm always up to play missions with allies (or villains) to add flavor and just thought I would shim in to tell you that this is a very nice thematic idea!

Thanks! You truly are the gold standard of backing stories, and thematic modifications - so appreciate your response. :D I admit I was inspired by a few of your mods that you have posted.

I’ll post back with how it goes when we finish. It may be a few days before we play the mission, as real life is getting in the way.

I think that's a great idea, as long as you're not worried about balance issues. Also...

It's possible that Jedi Luke could show up in a later mission. That could be a little weird from a narrative stance, as Han would never work with Jabba around the same time Luke was active as a Jedi.

But it also only matters if your group is super picky with canon. And the canon is already kind of screwey when you have Jedi Luke and Jabba on the same mission, anyway. Seems to contradict their meeting in ROTJ.

I’ll try to respond in spoiler as well

My group are just my wife and kids and we don’t get too wrapped up in timelines. We are happy to have Grand Inquisitor chasing around ObiWan. I don’t watch rebels , so maybe that happened?? Anyway, I don’t think that part is a dealbreaker.

I skimmed the story for other appearances by Han and didn’t see any. Also, I saw that the campaign for JR didn’t include any specific timeline. So I figured there could be events where Han was still running some shipments for Jabba :)

For sure, the timeline stuff seems to not be a focus of the releases ever since Bespin.

And honestly, I think it's a fair enough house rule to ignore it across the board.

Trust me, if you're having fun, you're playing the game the right way. :)

I'm sure I'm not the only one altering missions around! However, maybe I'm the one who posts the most about it ;) Thanks for the kind words! Based on your idea, you seem more creative than you think!

To preserve timeline, as a start I would substitute Jedi Luke for Obi-Wan (there might be some balance issues though, but like I said, it's a start). That could fit the time period pretty well if one wants to set Jabba's Realm before A New Hope.

You could always just use Obi Wan's figure with Jedi Luke's deployment card, too. That way, the board is canon friendly while the balance behind the scenes remains the same.

That’s a cool idea! Yes subtrendy(2) and IanSolo_FFG are the Yodas of modifications. Well, since we are talking about the IP, maybe the Palpatine of mods is more appropriate :)

In which case there can only be two : A master and an apprentice ;)

Oh, I think it's pretty clear you're the master. I'm barely an Inquisitor :P
