Jostero & Saturation Salvo

By emeraldbeacon, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I'm thinking this interaction *won't* work, but I figured I'd ask you folks' opinions...

Say I have Captain Jostero equipped with an Assault Missile, and Saturation Salvo. If I hit, I do extra splash damage and probably get to trigger his bonus attack on someone else. If I miss, Saturation Salvo gives me a 50/50 shot to trigger his bonus shot at somebody nearby. The big question is...

If Saturation Salvo damages the ship I originally attacked, can Jostero trigger his ability against that ship?

As I read the cards, I would guess that the answer is no: The timing window for Saturation Salvo seems to be step 8, which is still during the course of his combat activation. While the defender does risk the damage (a ship is at Range 1 of itself), Since he only stops being the defender after the conclusion of the attack, he would seem to be immune to Jostero's bonus damage.

Any other interpretations?

  • Captain Jostero idea for an upcoming 35 point furball event:
    • Vaksai because, duh.
    • Saturation Salvo for splash damage.
    • Assault Missile for splash damage
    • Stealth Device & Shield Upgrade for defense
    • Munitions Failsafe to keep my missile if I miss
    • Scavenger Crane to get my stuff back if I lose it

I see your point. But at step 8 and 9 is the defender technically still the defender. These are the steps that resolve and ability "After" you preform an attack and if you follow the flow chart, you have to declare a target again to start their process. So technically it is a separate attack (unlike TLT which gets sent back after step 6/7). Therefor would it not qualify the original target as a "new" defender, given that the attack against him has resolved?

The attack is over, and the damage is assigned then. It really comes down to when Sat Salvo assigns damage I guess. Is it considered part of the original attack or not. Given it says after, I would say no, but I can see either way.

It appears that the damage from Saturation Salvo is assigned in step 8 because of the word "resolve". Step 9 is for abilities that generate another attack a fter defending or after attacking. The small connecting block below step 9 takes you back to the beginning of the attack sequence where you designate the defender and Jostero's ability can resolve.

I would say that the original defender is not immune to Jostero' s ability. According to the attack timing chart, the defender is no longer considered the defender after step 8 is resolved because in step 9 a new defender can be chosen.(Gunner, BTL-A4, etc.)

Assuming two ships ( A and B) information, the sequence would be:

Jostero targets Ship A, attacks with Assault Missiles and misses. We're now at step 8.

Roll damage from Saturation Salvo. Assume both ship take normal damage.

We're now at step 9

Since both ships took damage, Jostero can use his ability against either one. He chooses ship A.

A target suffering damage that takes place after attacking, is not a target that is currently the target of an attack. S at Salvo can trigger Jostero, even on the original target of the missile.

Making Saturation Salvo worse isn't exactly deserved.

If I may draw your attention to FAQ, clarification for "I'll show you the dark side", page 9, the case is similiar to this one. Darth Vader cannot trigger I'll show you the dark side because it happens after the attack. If the same logic applies here then the damage from saturation salvo could trigger Jostero against the same target.

This is kind of fun!

For maximum trollage, put a Cruise Missile onto Jostero, and just choose to not roll the extra damage dice:

"I fire my Cruise Missile for one attack die... oh, I missed? Darn. Well, my Munitions Failsafe will reload the missile for me, and now you and your R1 buddies can all roll for damage... oh, someone got hit? Free primary attacks, then!"

That's a lot of points for not a lot of benefit considering yit only works on targets with 1 agi or lower.

2 points for half a damage per target assuming you and they don't both blank out.

You could just pay 3 points less, have a useful EPT, and use a generic.

Oh, I totally agree in most cases. But this is weird scenario: a 35 point free-for-all furball where you only get one ship against up to 7 other opponents. I want to be able to cause as much unexpected mayhem as possible. :D

Still only works on 1 agi targets.

35 point furballs are won by being ignored, not by being scary.

Cruise missiles would work on 1 or 2 agi targets. Harpoons work on 3agi, Assault would even work on 4agi.

And besides, it's a casual event - I want to have fun and be a troll. Like when I flew Rhymer with Snap Shot, and Vader.

Cruise missiles cost 2 on a Vaksai...

Nice catch, I would not have thought of that one.

It gets more hilarious if the original target gets the splash damage and then you fire a second missile at him right away :P
