Went to the latest league night, looking to play rebel, since I already claimed bounties for scum and imperial. I was hoping to take down a Kylo Ren, which never happened. That's ok, i'll just run rebels until I do. (my last report was expertise brobots)
There was 24 players
Last league night, there was a LOT of Ghost/fenn lists, of which I only played one. I thought this might persist, so I wanted to be able to deal with the ghost, and what better way than to bring a pile of red dice? Generally, the T70 is the rebel ship I have the best record with. I own 3, so what could I add? A U-wing. possibly inspired by the announcement of saw's renegades. I also toyed with doing a jess/snap/nien list, but preferred 4 ships.
I settled on
3x Blue Squadron Novice w/ R2 astro & Integrated Astro 25 each
Blue Squadron Pathfinder w/ Pivot wing & Fire Control System 25
I got there early, so I was able to get most of a practice game in! I always like getting to warm up the engines on the ships, so to speak, it helps me to get into the right mindset for the real rounds.
He was playing
Nym w/ (10 upgrades!) Trajectory, Proton Bombs, Bomblets, Harpoons(?) Probably Havoc title, TLT, etc.
Bossk w/ Expert handling dengar, tactician, mangler, maybe something else
.
I set up on my left, pointing sideways, he set up bosk in the opposite corner, facing me, with nym right next to him on the inside.
Basic Strategy, stay on the Nym side, take out nym first, then bossk.
This game i'm a little hazy on the details, but I blitzed him mostly, and he slow rolled. I had my guys coming in from the center, And went after nym. Nym was harder to kill than I anticipated. And he pulled him away so I had to take some heat from bossk if I wanted to continue my thrashing of Nym, (which I did.) And got kind of lucky. I know I lost my U-wing first, got some proton damage on 2 of my x-wings. I took out Nym, and soon it was down to 2 x-wings and bossk. by the time we had to quit to clean up for the tourney, bossk was at 1 hull, my 2 x-wings wereinto hull, but I can't remember exactly.
Round 1 pairing, list as far as I remember, but they were both 50
Dash w/ title, mangler, lone wolf, rey, burnout slam, smuggling compartment 50
Miranda w/ cluster mines, bomblet, sabine, harpoons, tlt. 50
I set up with my xwings sideways from the middle, facing my left. He set up Miranda a third from my left on his side, and Dash on my right corner. I thought this was odd, as Miranda seemed a little exposed. I thought maybe he was going to turn in with Miranda and run away, then offer me dash to play with instead, but I'd have enough time to switch targets if that happened, even if I was aggressive, which I was. I was able to get all 3 x-wings with shots on Miranda, taking off all shields, and 1 damage card. Thinking she'd blow by me, I talon rolled left, hoping to catch her the same way, but she took the other way. Pretty much no shots. I swung in to try to catch her, and she dropped cluster mines to keep me from following. I ended up having one of my ships k-turn across one of the tokens, so another can turn over it to follow Miranda. At this point, I can't really remember what my U-wing was doing, dash was hanging out, conservatively staying at the edge of range 3 from the x-wings. I do remember that we had a big party in my left corner of the board, but I was able to finally take Miranda out, not long before the game was over. At time, I had 2 pretty healthy ships, and he had a pretty healthy dash. 50 - 50, down to FINAL SALVO. I rolled 6 dice for my 2 3-die ships, he rolled 2 for his one 2-die ship. I rolled 4 hits. game over, I win with an mov of 100. lol.
Round 2
2 nu's with harpoons, LRS
2 x7 delta's
I had Initiative.
I had seen this list, and was hoping not to be paired against it. it was a lot of meat to chew through, including harpoons. It was hilarious that PS2 was the highest on the table. He sets his defenders to my left, facing diagonally. I placed my forces along my edge near the middle, facing right. X-wings in front, u wing in back. he places the Nu's in the middle facing me.
What I really want to get is to engage either Nu's or the Defenders first. I know there's no way to get that. If I pick one as my target, I'll have to deal with the other ones picking me apart. I decide that the Nu's are target priority. they can't avoid damage as well, and I don't like reloadable harpoons. And, with the amount of ships on the board, they may have a hard time flying away.
Over the first couple turns, I head to my right and start down the side of the board with the x-wings, turn in more to the inside with the u-wing. His defenders shot forward, and the nu's did a conservative 1 or 2 straight. and banked towards my x-wings. I tired shooting into range 1 with my x-wings, but didn't quite make it. I did make it into range 2, so his long range scanner nu's couldn't change targets, and only one had a harpoon shot. I think I took one damage, but now had the condition. I went into hull on one of the nu's.
From here there was a pileup in the middle of the table, I was happy leaving my (now 2) harpooned ships in range 1 of his ships, so he'd have to think twice about attacking them. the U-wing get's beat up a bit, so I flee off to his side of the board to limit the shots he's taking. the x-wings take out one of the defenders, then the damaged nu. the other nu takes a walk around the asteroids, and starts to rejoin the action, then gets killed.
at time, I think I got 72 points, not getting the second defender, I think I had 2 x-wings left, and the Uwing was half points, so he got 38, I think?
At this point, I had the 2 wins I usually get, so I'm preparing for my usual loss. Surprise, surprise, I get paired for round 3 with the guy I played the practice game against.
Nym w/ (10 upgrades!) Trajectory, Proton Bombs, Bomblets, Harpoons(?) Probably Havoc title, TLT, etc.
Bossk w/ Expert handling dengar, tactician, mangler, maybe something else
I wanted to try something different, since the other game we played seemed too lucky for me to try the same approach.
I placed along my edge on the right, facing left.
He placed his ships across, my right corner , same as first game.
goal is the same as the first time, take out nym, get bossk later.
I shoot to my left, boosting every move. My goal is to use the U-wing as bait while I circle the board with the T-70's. It's not that I think I can really fool my opponent, but last game I came through the asteroids, and this time, i'm taking longer to come around. If He follows the u-wing, great, i'll take some damage, but I can have 3 t-70s coming in, only having to really worry about the TLT. (and bombs, but whatever.) If he turns in on the x-wings, bossk will be easy to avoid.
He decided to circle the board after the U-wing. 2 times I bluff with the pivot wing, and I don't know if he thought I was going to turn around and fight or not, or if he just wanted to take advantage of the 1 agility, but he was kind of committed. (I think that having nym on the inside made it harder for bossk to change course?)
Either way, my x-wings and nym were chewing on each other, and by the time his ships reached my left corner, nym was done, after doing a bit of tlt and bomb damage to the x-wings. I was able to mostly keep out of bossk's arc for the remainder, and by the time he died, I had a half-health U-wing and an x-wing left.
100-63?
3 wins! I haven't had 3 wins in a long time, since I brought a poe/nien/snap list. I wonder if I have an affinity with these T-70s
I was the lowest scoring undefeated, so I got 3rd place due to low MOV, which to me doesn't matter at all. I'm really proud to do as well as I did, especially with a super-not-meta list. I loved all of the 'whoa, a U-wing?!' reactions. 'wait, you're flying WHAT?' Though i'd prefer flying a 4th t-70 over the U-wing for maneuverability reasons, what was nice about the u-wing was that people loved going after it first, because they could get half points easily, I guess. Maybe they just thought it's so bad, they'd put it out of its misery. Interestingly enough, I only lost it in my first round game.
I also found that having 4 25 point ships makes scoring a cinch.
In the future, i'll try to get some pictures, even if it's just the opening placements.
