3rd Party Sci-Fi Maps

By GILLIES291, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

For anyone interested, just found this beauty on Kickstarter. It's a map pack for the old WOTC Star Wars miniatures game but has a cool sci-fi theme and looks pretty compatible with IA size-wise if you ignore some of the line highlighting.

Yep, these maps are great. I played SWM for many years (and still dabble in it a bit), and these maps can be very workable for IA. There are literally dozens of maps available if you can get your hands on them. In Campaign play, that can make for a lot of different create-your-own-Campaign adventures. In Skirmish play, that opens up a whole pile of interesting new missions (but you'll need to come up with Mission objectives for each map).

One thing is worth mentioning: SWM maps generally have quite a bit more open space than IA maps do, so you'll find that some of the gameplay might work out differently.

Conversions to make the markings on SWM maps work for IA:

  • Green lines : Low objects (crates, desks, etc). In SWM this provides cover, but for IA it should just count as Difficult Terrain (ie, Blue squares).
  • Yellow lines : Difficult terrain (stairs, rubble, etc). Again, in IA this simply counts as Difficult Terrain ( Blue squares).
  • Pink/Magenta lines : Walls . Treat them as the thick Black lines on IA maps (ie, nothing can move through it, not even Massive Mobile figures).
  • Orange lines : Pits . These are relatively rare on SWM and should count as Red squares/lines on an IA map. That is, Mobile and Massive figures don't tend to care about them. Although, because of how some pits are designed in maps, might need to make a rule that a Massive figure must always be standing in at least X squares of non-pit squares (X = 2-4??)
  • Light-Blue Squares : Doors . Doors work differently in SWM than they do in IA, and they can be anywhere from 1-square long to 4-5 or more, and they can sometimes also be oddly shaped. However, don't let that throw you: you can treat them the same as normal IA doors (ie, once they're open they stay open) and everything will work fine.

I hope you have fun with them!

Some of the fan made maps for SWM were great. The Millenium Falcon was one of my favorites. Also, there is the inside of a large space ship map that is very well done. I've used it before for playtesting my own game rules. And, once, I used it in a special scenerio among friends where we took a bunch Rakgouls and some Alien eggs from another game and recreated Awful Green Things from Outer Space.

These are also great for Edge of the Empire, we have used these with the SWM and IA minis in our EotE campaign.

Does this thing come with figures? or is it just here is a map, do what you want with it? Would I need to buy the first few packs for it to work?

This is just a map pack, so it's all about terrain/locations to use for whatever Star Wars game you want.

If you want more figures then definitely check out cool stuff or troll and toad websites for Star Wars miniatures line and there is a ton of options. But that's from an entirely different game in itself. It's a solid game too that I've played for years and still play alongside fantasy flights latest offerings, but the miniatures each have their own card and perform quite differently then Imperial Assualt Rules.

For campaigns and rpgs you can mix and match from it all as the old Star Wars Miniatures game covers all of Star Wars history from the old republic to the yuuzhan Vong, so tons of different miniature content.

Despite the old miniatures game being out of print and no longer officially supported, there is actually virtual sets still being released from a large dedicated online community for things that were missed in the game, miniatures that were underpowered and new Disney era characters.

Anyways TLDR:

-these maps are awesome and work with any game/rpg

-if you want more Star Wars figures then check out shops online for old Wizards of the Coast miniatures

-if you want to be able to use the cards for new miniatures then you'll have to either make your own cards or just try out the different game entirely Star Wars Miniatures. In that case head to www.bloomilk.com and ask around about that one.

If it's Star Wars I play it so I see a place for everything but that's just me. Hope that helps!
