Thoughts on why people play unpainted

By Nohwear, in Star Wars: Legion

First of all, I just want to state that this has nothing to do with rather or not Legion models should come pre-painted. FFG has made their decision and I highly doubt that they will change their mind at this point.

Now then, you know how some people don't want you to see their drawings? Now imagine that their tablets cost $25 per page. Further in order to get the most enjoyment from these drawings, they have to put them on display. Further they can also get the same enjoyment from the tablet by just using a blank page. This is why I play unpainted at least.

Im waiting for a point to be made

Some people hate painting, I get that. I hate painting. I still paint everything because I enjoy playing with painted miniatures more than unpainted ones. When you convert or paint a miniature you feel a connection with it because you have had a small hand in creating it. I never sell miniatures that I painted for this reason.

@Jabby I finished my point after editing. Stupid fat fingers.

I can understand why some people don't like to paint their miniatures. Personally I find painting miniatures relaxing as I listen to some cool music or a good podcast. The only thing that I find offsetting about playing against unpainted miniatures is that it takes you out of moment. You don't have to be a great painter, trust me it all looks good from 3 feet away.

I think that people don't realize how easy it is to produce a good looking paint job with a small amount of practice. Go buy yourself some cheap 1/72 italeri models (you get like 50 in a box for 10 dollars) paint them with block colors, then experiment dipping, washing and drybrushing. After you work through the box you will be much more confident.

My main problem is details. I have terrible fine motor control. I can not help but feel that there is no real difference between all grey and all white, using storm troopers as an example.

I've fielded unpainted/in the process of being painted minis just because I want to be able to play with my toys before I am able to finish painting. It doesn't particularly bother me to play against someone with unpainted minis.

I like to paint because I like certain colors and want a matching color scheme. I have this very dark, rich royal blue that I'm super excited to paint my Rebels in.

I don't see why people would care if someone else paints or doesn't paint their stuff. After all, you could play Legion with card board circles that match the size of the bases, and put a stick that matches the height of the troops.

I will paint mine but I’m little nervous about it, likely will just keep it simple. I bought paints and washes and hopefully that will all work out. I just really want to play the game! I have some serious consideration to just cutting WotC SW Minis if based and the. Rebasing them in the ffg ones just so I didn’t have to paint. But I am going to give it the old college try and maybe learn something new.

I spend 80% traveling for work. I am finding the painting, which I am brand new at, is relaxing. Could I outsource the paint job? Yes, I am fortunate enough to have that option. Am I going to do so? No, sort of enjoying painting and I am dealing with a slight medical issue that causes my hands to go completely numb. I am just enjoying the process and doing it myself. Somedays I can go an hour ... somedays more ... somedays no go.

Would I judge someone because they have unpainted miniatures? Absolutely not. I have no understanding of their background/situation be it time; finances; family obligations; work commitments or even health, which I deal with.

A lot of bravado on the boards this weekend ... strong opinions transcending into arguments ... and just don't see the need to burn those calories.

In terms of why unpainted ... for me it is very much a seek to understand / up to the individual and not that big of a deal

I am a bit of a perfectionist and an unskilled painter. So I can understand not wanting to sign there and continually look at my bad paint jobs while playing.

At the same time I am primarily getting this game for the gameplay and I would rather see painted minis. Also I will probably have to build the community here and I assume people will be more interested if it looks good. So I'm going to attempt to paint mine.

One argument I haven't seen anyone make for getting two core sets is it gives you a second Luke and Vader in case you mess up the paint job on the first. I can see myself putting off painting those two almost indefinitely just because I am afraid of messing up.

An overnight soak in Simple Green or a local analogue will strip most modeling paints without any damage to plastic.

Why unpainted.... because I have motor skill issues, trouble seeing small details and minor colour differences... I've damaged both hands punching things over the years..don't have much hobby time anymore so prefer to play & I don't earn enough to pay someone else to do it for me

Maybe just maybe that might be the reason why....

:P

Main reasons?

Time

Skill

Just want to play the game

Not strictly me with these, but common reasons.

Same here, my hands can’t stay still. My fingers twitch a lot. But you have to try. Start with stuff that has very few details. “Well, you have to start somewhere” - Orson Krennic

The whole 'to paint, or not to paint' stems from the 40k world.

Once upon a time, the entry requirement for 40k official tournaments was a three coloured paint job. So even the promotional photos from a distance had that cool look of two painted armies going for it.

Many years later, there's little need for the paint requirement. I can understand the urge to not paint as well as understanding the urge to paint. from some of the shots I've seen from the website, there are two coloured bases for models, so, with the plastic the same colour, the unpainted bases differentiate the armies.

Unless the FFG organised tournaments require painting to be mandatory, then let's enjoy the hobby as we interpret it.

Get the some kids to paint them for you.

Or try this Imperials list....Here is 800pts

Darth Vader = Spray Black and then paint the sabre Grey, then White, then Red

3 x Storm-troopers = Spray Grey and then White from above, then wash with army painter dark tone

Speeder-bike = Spray the bike brown, and silver paint the mechanical bits ect, wash with army painter dark tone. The scout the same as the troopers, paint them separate then attach once both are done

AT-ST = Spray Silver and wash with army painter dark tone

I don't imagine this will take much time in actual doing, and more waiting for the paint to dry! Also use cheap spray cans and wood stain can be used from what I have seen on youtube as a sub for the Army painter washes. So can be done on a budget!

I obviously haven't done this myself (as I don't have the figures) and personally will be putting in more effort. But to be honest not much more effort, I will add some dry brushing and a little more detail to the mix.

Same with computer games: In a good game good graphics don't hurt, but a bad game can't be redeemed by good graphics.

"Freshly Painted Model Syndrome"

Its real. But I try to paint my minis 90% of the time. I love doing it, and you don't have to follow the standard. It makes unique, interesting, fun models to look at and play against.

I will paint my minis but I will not wait to play until they are all pained. My first games will most likely be done unpainted, and then I will probably play with partially painted minis.

I envy you as I will sending mine out to be painted which means I probably won't get my first game in until the end of April :(

I am looking forward to painting these miniatures but somewhat reluctantly so. From experience I am getting 2 sets.

I own 2 sets of all box sets of Star Wars Imperial Assault and have painted over 240 miniatures just for that game. I started playing the game at home with my kids and they loved it. I have created 3D maps for custom skirmishes and that is what has lead me to Legion. (At this time I only owned one complete set)

To make a long story short... My kids attend a special needs school and begged me to bring Imperial Assault to game day at school. This became an instant hit at their school and almost everyone wanted to play. I had to purchase a second complete set to accommodate the demand. (Not enough figures to go around) I had made some small 3D tables for the kids to play on. (So much easier to teach on a 3D table) Of course we just use basic rules...Just use the bottom of the card stats NO special abilities to create a somewhat even playing field. I even created custom cards to include characters not in the game that should be and found nice WotC miniatures to fill in. (Ackbar, Yoda, Nien Nunb, Tarkin, 4-Lom, Zuckuss, Boussh, Wedge Antilles, General Veers, Bib Fortuna, Lobot and a bunch of canon droids.)

My point is that I am actually dreading painting anymore Stormtroopers/Snowtroopers. I am excited about Scout troopers but I will honestly paint them all. I will do as I did with Imperial Assault. I gave some Stormtroopers a Shadowtrooper paint scheme in every type. (Basic, Jet, Heavy, Riot) This will break it up and make it not seem like an assembly line.

Whether or not anyone chooses to paint their miniatures it is truly all about the game. Painted or Unpainted just have fun.

My only thought is does someone who has no desire to paint miniatures have any desire to create a gaming table or will their table consist of just 8 barricades?

anyone can create an interesting table at home. Books, aluminum cans, bottles, cardboard boxes, and other common household items can create all the obstacles you would need. It wouldn't look as good as custom made terrain but it would work just as well mechanic wise.

I agree. I was not knocking anyone. Everything I have made I have honestly turned would be trash into terrain.

The pieces I made for the tables for my children's school are made from aluminum cans and bendy straws, painted to look like Scarrif fuel containers, Pop Tart boxes and foam board covered in wall filler to resemble Tattooine houses. An Endor bunker made from scratch cut from used Priority Mail boxes and painted with enamel paint to prevent warping. I made a city entrance from two turned over Ricotta containers with a foam board arch way in between them. I made a small shield generator from large plastic drinking cup lids from a gas station cut in half glued together and painted gray.

Nothing looks professionally made and the kids love it.
