Haunted City Chase

By Dragonshadow, in Genesys

I'm still not finding my GMing groove yet for Genesys despite running a couple Star Wars sessions a few years ago. Not wanting to give away any detail for the scene itself in the Haunted City playtest, but there's a likely chase scene involving the PC's and another party, with possibly an additional group of hostile NPC's joining in depending on how mean your GM wants to be :D . I want it to be a rollicking good scene, but I'm a bit unsure of how to make it fun but fair.

This thread was very helpful: Chases . But it didn't quite capture the complexity of multiple parties beyond just two sides.

Can some folks who either GMed (or played in) the playtest or ran something very similar chime in with some specifics. While I'm remaining spoiler free with my question, feel free to use spoilers for your answer and the rest of you can stop reading at this time, please.

I’ve always found chases to be one of the hardest things to run in RPGs. They don’t really come up often enough to justify big complex systems to run like combat does, but they have so many variables that anything less always seems to fall short.

The only time I've ever seen Chases done right was Spycraft 2.0. They're hard to do without turning them into just a battle of who has more skill ranks or terrible luck.

The Dice Pool podcast did this fairly well. Worth checking out if you’re interested - look for their Haunted City sample playthrough, it’s quite good.

Yeah, that was definitely helpful, thanks! There were a couple points where I wasn't sure how the rules of the scene were actually shaking out, but I think that was kinda the point that GM Hooly actually mentioned when he indicated they'd be adapting the Star Wars chase rules for lack of other ones.

I think the only thing I'll do differently is have the pets stop by to pick up PC stragglers and keep them "in the scene" even if they fall behind. Mwahaha!
