*At best, Ankaur Maro can add only 16 trays in a single game, so it's technically not "endless," but it's close.

As a salty Maro player I just have to add that you can actually raise a maximum of 12 trays due to the needed healing (see below), and that would require Fortuna's dice and Regen magic which totals 51 points, AND an insane rune and dice (to heal) luck. In reality I think 5-9 trays is what is feasable. Last game I managed 3 due to being intercepted by an Uthuk rush (yes I played badly, but you can't run and raise or heal at the same time). And note that trays raised during the match is less valuable each round they are delayed, as for example the trays you raise round 8 is unlikely to perform as much as if you started with them. And if you end with a larger unit than what was set up they are not worth any victory points.

Optimal round breakdown as far as I can tell:

2 + 2 + Heal (4hp) + 2 + 2 + Heal (4hp) + 2 + 2

Yeah, I meant with the figure upgrade, but I didn't feel like writing that. Sorry for the confusion. You're absolutely right that the healing rounds knock the number of trays down, and the runes have to be perfect for the Maro hero unit to do his work.

But I disagree that trays added later are less valuable. First, you can add trays in a late round to bring your infantry tray count up so that you preserve points on that unit. Second, and this is my favorite, you can add trays to get another rank on one side when flanked on that one side to give the attacker a nasty surprise. One round, my 3x3 was missing 4 trays (back rank gone, and one tray from the 2nd rank), and the flanker was on the side that had only 1 full rank, so I was threat 1. But Maro added 2 trays, both to that side, allowing my Reanimates to surprise attack for threat 3! Pretty neat, if a little niche.

@Parakitor you are right about the max trays, didn't think about the embedded version! It feels weird that it is the (far?) superior choice for necro, both in terms of maximum trays and reliability to produce trays, AND you can actually deal a fair amount of damage while doing it while having a lot more hitpoints!

Though I will persist in my belief that a tray is worth more for every round it is in action.

I think it's correct that earlier trays have more value as trays in general (more time to modify rolls), but later "clutch" trays can have more value under specific circumstances since they react to a specific present threat rather than anticipate a potential future one.

Yeah, I want to pick out a Waiqar avatar, but this TIE interceptor is now phased out, so I'm holding onto it just because it's not available anymore. I pretend it makes me special.

Self-uploaded avatar, get on my level :P

After looking into it Runewars appeals to me a bit more as a game, but the hobby side of things makes me like Legion better. I prefer the look of round bases and the vehicles are just grandiose. Unless I'm selling off X-Wing I don't really have the budget, though, and Blood Bowl and Shadespire have me covered on the hobby side for a while, so both games will be a pass for now. If I ever have the budget the descision will be tough, and probably dependant on how Legion looks in play and wether I want a new game or a new project.
