Legion...

By TheWiseGuy, in Runewars Miniatures Game

I was quite excited for Legion for a moment when it was announced, but realized soon I am quite saturated both with Star Wars (X-Wing, the movies) and miniatures (Runewars). In addition, what I've seen from the gameplay leaves me cold so far - Runewars seems to be the more intricate and interesting game to me.

So, I'll happily play a demo when the opportunity arises, but I'll not be buying or painting anything from Legion in the foreseeable future.

This goes for me as well.

Nah. X-Wing, Runewars and Shadespire will do.

The more I hear about Legion the more I want people to stop talking about Legion already. Very little in it actually seems new and interesting after X-Wing, IA, Armada etc.

However I would appreciate more interesting rules for terrain in Runewars so we can also have awesome looking boards instead of 2 squares in an emty field and oh look a small rock my unit cannot split and go around :D

Also they don't have happy skeletons on 'uge worms.

I have to admit, I came to Runewars from Dice Masters (very different games). When Star Wars Destiny released, even though it was very different in game play, it pulled a ton of people away from Dice Masters. I kinda have a sore spot with the Star Wars IP. I wasn't thrilled when I saw Legion, especially since many of my friends are casual gamers, and in their minds, they have the choice between a fantasy or Star Wars miniatures game, doesn't matter that the game play is different. Same thing has happened with Descent and Imperial Assault with my friends. I guess that's three games I have loved that have now been invaded by the force.

Dice Masters were a mothertrucking DISASTER balance-wise competitively. I think people expected more from Destiny (the DM IPs were strong - Marvel, DC, D&D and Turtles? Heck yeah!).

As someone who stuck it out through the long dark of the Star Wars EU novels, poring over every fansite description for stats on Star Destroyers to write SW RPG campaigns and arguing over whether or not Boba Fett was really Jaster Mereel...

Guys, I'm sick of Star Wars. It's everywhere. It's everything. It's not going to stop.

FFG plz. Work on your own stuff.

You realize FFG is a business and the star wars license is basically a license to print money. Honestly selling Star Wars products is most likely what enables FFG to take risks on things like Runewars.

I understand precisely WHY it's happening. It's the same reason Star Wars is plastered over every product on every shelf in every town and being licensed out into multiple sets of trilogies, spin offs, shows, and what have you.

That doesn't mean I have to like it, nor does it mean I have to respect it.

It's also not going to last. When the bubble bursts, people are going to be well and truly sick of the franchise. Mindless profit seeking always ends the same way. Pockets stuffed with cash and fandoms generally discontent.

Yes. Welcome to our capitalist world. Milk every product for all it is worth. Not worth getting angry over. It is what it is, no one is forcing you to buy in.

I'm not angry.

I'm disappointed.

It's a subtle distinction, but a valid one. I had hoped for better, and I'll continue hoping for better. I'll probably be disappointed a lot.

So your not playing Legion?

I'm certainly not paying money for it.

Something tells me there'll be plenty of surplus, and more than a few people asking me to.

I have noticed something since all the Legion articles have been pouring out. I'm beginning to wonder if Legion will kind of Implode. It's a brand new game and appears to have a bunch of skus to release at same time with the core. Assuming that the core is $99 its gonna be a very expensive buy in. I wonder how many really have the money to start. I know I don't.

Be honest. We all with Runewars was released this way.

Even if you buy everything available at release for both sides at full retail you are looking at £300 or so. To put that in context with the buy-in cost for other big minis games that’s a touch under 1/3rd of the cost of a reasonable 40k force plus rules and codex

The core for Legion is $89.95. The expansions are full units unto themselves. You buy a single core and 1 of each expansion and you have 2 ready to go armies for around $270. Wanna customize it a little? Won't have to spend more than $150 extra per side to max out your options, and that's assuming you don't buy 2 core sets.

@rowdyoctopus and @darkjawa103 need to come to an understanding about their avatars. I just got so confused. But then again it's friday afternoon and my brain is fried from a week of work.

Just like how @Ywingscum got kicked off of your avatar, huh? ;)

It was the only Waiqar-ish Avatar I could find

Yeah, I want to pick out a Waiqar avatar, but this TIE interceptor is now phased out, so I'm holding onto it just because it's not available anymore. I pretend it makes me special.

Anyone thinking about "if you can't beat them join them" in regards to Legion. I just want to play a miniature game regularly with varying opponents.

I'm not giving up on Runewars by any means, I'm demoing a game next week at a store, but if the printers aren't printing Runewars I might dabble in Legion in the mean time.

I kinda want Legion but with the Runewars theme. I've no interest in yet another star wars game, and no interest in rank-and-file combat with buckets of miniatures.

Play Latari! Both heroes, few Scions, some archers and cav to taste, you'll be super mobile and not many minis.

Wow, that's a really good point. Daqan can get away with running both heroes, too.

I'm pretty sure you could play Waiqar with as few mins, but why would you when you could have endless* hordes of skeleton warriors?

*At best, Ankaur Maro can add only 16 trays in a single game, so it's technically not "endless," but it's close.

Yes one avatar per person. Fights to the death to keep them!

(And I also told @Ywingscum I wouldn’t hold him to changing, but he’s such a stand up guy he honored his word anyways.)
