Why Are You Bad At X-Wing?

By Boom Owl, in X-Wing

...because I get bored easily. Playing the same thing over and over and over and over and over.... Thanks, but i'll be in my trailer.

It's an opinion. He's invested in what he's familiar with, and not invested in things he has no experience with. The ships he's familiar with feel real to him, and others don't, because he's not used to them.

I am in a similar vein. I've never watched Rebels, so the Ghost looks nothing like a Star Wars ship to me and it always looks out of place on the table. Ditto the Gunboat with whatever game it's from , it feels jarring to see one flying alongside Vader. But I did (exhaustively) play Decipher's CCG, so I have absolutely no problem listing Defenders alongside Interceptors as standard OT ships.

You present a totally valid perspective NTE, but this gave me a twitching aneurysm! TIE Fighter kept X-Wing alive in my heart at the peak of those long, empty years!

rock placement is over rated XD. in a 4 round store tourney i went 16/18 when rolling for Debris damage. ( 16 times no damage )

Agreed. It should be random anyways; let the TO set them up beforehand, and the guy without initiative chooses sides.

Red Leader: "Three marks at 2-10. Red 5, put your asteroid over there to block their approach. Red 7, put your asteroid in front of you and hide behind it. I'll put my asteroid out last, so I can see where Vader put his asteroid. Good luck, boys."

You must have been flying Dash and forgot to use his ability...twice.

I'm bad because when I want my opponent to COME AT ME (Bruh!)... they don't. Then they just flank around me and it throws me off.

-Ignoring odds.

-Preferring to go for total victory rather than save points.

-Bad spatial awareness.

-playing what I want (which does include some meta pieces and lists, but I also dislike mirror matches).

-target priority.

Ditto.

Also, I'm bad at X-Wing because I have to come up with a fluff-related theme before building a list.

And I'm really bad at large swarms.

The below casts don't have all the answers on how to become less bad at X-Wing...but they can help a little bit, especially if you keep an open mind.

I am bad at X-wing, because....

- I play in a very small group against the same opponents who are familiar with how I fly

- don´ t care about rock placement

- have a plan for turn 1 and continue on feel/instinct

- have a complete disregard for whatever meta exists in tournament regions

- start playing better after losing ships. I fly a lot better with 1 or 2 ships compared with 3 or 4.

- disregard the roles intended for particular ships; I am told I manage to play several non-flanker ships as if they are a flanker, but fly a flanker as a jouster (and naturally explode).

I am bad at X-Wing because I...

  • ...don't know how to use Inquisitor
  • ...don't use Whisper anymore
  • ...joust when I shouldn't
  • ...go slow when I shouldn't
  • ...re-position when I should focus/evade
  • ...put my first rock in the wrong place
  • ...always have at least a 2-4 pt bid
  • ...feel like Top 8-16 is an accomplishment
  • ...lose during the place forces phase
  • ...lose to Assaj
  • ...lose to Rey
  • ...lose to Dash/Poe
  • ...lose to Defenders
  • ...lose to Quad TLT
  • ...am bad at math

Why are you bad at X-Wing?

Turrets..... actually just TLTs really.

There, I said it.....it's probably a lie, I just go from "wow you're great" to "man you suck" with unknown commonality. But h**l, if I'm honest, it's because I like to fly space superiority fighters like Interceptors, A-Wings, Phantoms, TIE Fighters, T-65s and 70s....that's the actual problem.

Now where's my tea?

You don't see dead people?

I'm bad at X-Wing because...

○I love my A-Wings.

○I use too many chain combos.

○I'm predisposed toward maneuvers and repositioning.

○I hate using generic pilots.

Nope! Only rainbows and unicorns.

(PS, thanks. Fixed that.)

Also suggest using this to learn the basics about all kinds of lists.

The pre-built tournaments button is really helpful.

https://baranidlo.github.io/bench/#

I've tried this a few times and constantly run into different issues. I really want to get this type of practice.

I tried using Kylo and whenever i click that as my action the whole match just stops.

Any suggestions?

pretty sure Listener one can just be skipped. it goes on and on about the history of changes made to some card game to make a point that I don't even remember. I suppose that may be very interesting to some.

All the others were really good listens.

I'm bad at the game because I hardly play any more :(

I'm bad because change lists too fast.

I'm bad because my only opponent is my wife, who isnt a "serious" gamer... I'm miserable if I feel like she's not having fun, so I remind her of her upgrades and skills, make her remeasure moves instead of crashing, occasionally forget to point out crits and negative card interactions, and I always try to run thematic and/or silly or funny lists.. because I'm just grateful she'll even make the effort to play from time to time.

Also because I adore Interceptors and will jam one into every list I make ever.

This is ME! Except my wife won't play... so I beg friends who aren't gamers to "try it out" which means I'm a noob teaching noobs and haven't had the chance to really understand it all - plus I have an 18 month old and I'm daddy day care - so there's that.

bump?

  • I am just not that competitive.
  • I have a terrible memory.
  • I hate squad building, and would prefer to just use a draft system, or play scenarios / campaign.
  • I really like the OT ships even though they suck in this game.
  • I think that optimization and the Star Wars universe go together like week old tuna fish and ice cream.

Well that's all I can come up with right now. I am sure there are plenty more reasons I suck at this game.

I am bad at X-Wing because I don’t get enough games in for practice. One game every other week against the same player is not enough.

I'm bad at X-Wing because I don't play enough, and insist on playing what I think is fun rather than what is objectively good. (Cough Soontir Kylo cough cough).

I’m bad because I don’t play nearly enough, play lists I like not meta lists, theme and fluff are more important than winning. I like to have fun playing my favorites characters even if the list loses.

I'm bad at X-Wing because I somehow keep confusing one ship for another, despite them both being marked numerically and looking nothing like each other.

Opponent: Whoa, whoa. Why are you moving that?

Me: The TIE Defender goes next, right?

Opponent: Yes, but that's not a TIE Defender. That's a Corellian Corvette. And it's not yours. And it's not on the field. And it's still in the box. And you haven't even paid for it yet.

Me: ...so, it goes after the TIE Defender?
