I'm a bit dense because i feel like i'm missing something why shouldn't i pick up a second core set for less of the price to get more rebel / stormtroopers additional maneuver and dice ? Nomatter how i spin the math it seems that the coreset is a much better value than the expansions that you can get separately + the dice / maneuver tool. Can someone enlighten me ?
What's the point of the expansions outside the core set

Different cards

Simple as that. "some more cards"
There are a couple different cards that will be available with other troopers down the line, I think it was grapplin hooks and a 2nd kind of grenade. I am sure someone can correct me on that. On the Speeder bike there is a alternate pose.
Different upgrades is the only reason for the wave 1 expansions. Eventually new unit types will be added to the game.
I am currently leaning towards two cores over core and expansions for cost savings and I really don’t care about the upgrades so far in the other packs.
I will never take part in a tournament so I will probably buy two cores and print the extra cards off on cardstock then put them in sleeves.
The speeder bikes and at-Rt have different poses. This is the biggest reason for me to want those expansions. More diversity is a good thing.
I want Fleet Troopers, so I'm happy to run a mix of regular Rebels and Fleet Troops.
The new cards that show up in the ATRT, Speederbikes, Rebel Troops, and Stormtroopers will also be found in the T47, ATST, Fleet Troopers, and Snowtroopers. So if you’re willing to wait a month, you’ll still have access to all card without having to buy the duplicate expansions.

I am willing to wait for the fleet troopers and snow troopers.
I really want to buy a couple T47's though and give one an Imperial paint scheme. Thinking of doing the same to an AT-RT. Considering giving an AT-ST a salvaged by the Rebels look too.
I'm not sure you do get different cards, but if all you want is two more storm trooper squads or two more rebel trooper squads, it is cheaper to buy the squads by themselves. So if you want to invest solely in one side or the other you it might be in you best interest to buy expansions.

It’s 100% confirmed across the FFG articles themselves that you get different cards
