Repairing Probe Droids

By dysartes, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

Morning all,

So, Probe Droids - they come packaged pretty carefully, in their own cardboard sleeve, so they can't rattle around too much, yet two of mine are broken off their bases already, before I even try to undercoat the things.

It looks like a pretty small contact area to try to superglue them back into place - has anyone got any other recommendations on repair approaches?

I can grab a pic this evening (getting ready for work atm) if people need to see the damage.

Cheers.

If they were broken upon delivery (as in, when you opened the box) contact FFG Customer Service and they'll provide new ones. When I went about painting mine, I reinforced the connection with superglue just for safety. You could also try to pin them (ie. drill a hole in the leg and in the base and insert a metalrod to strengthen the connection - but with such slender legs it might be hard.

You can certainly contact FFG Customer Service to get new probe droids. Unfortunately, the shipping of these figures simply jars them loose from their base. Even the replacements could break in-transit too.

Pinning and gluing these guys is really tough. I tried to glue my broken ones with unsuccessful results because that contact point is so small and the weight of the figure is high.

Another option is to forgo using the legs as the connection point and create the "floating" probe droids by drilling a hole into the bottom of the body and inserting a plastic rod (like extra X-Wing pins or clear acrylic rods) then gluing that to a base. It's sturdier, more reliable, and better looking too! I can post a picture of mine when I get home from work or I'm sure there's a picture on the forums somewhere...

Well, I've submitted the form to Customer Services - I'll see what the response is.

The Archangel, I like the idea of using X-Wing flight pegs (or possibly taller GW flight stands?) to provide a new peg - or even a non-clear rod if you don't mind a visible flight stand. Hmm...

I had 3 legs detached (2 of one and 1 of another). I used a "regular" generic plastic/rubber glue. I have painted and coated the Probe Droids afterwards, which provides extra adhesion and stability.

Turn crisis into opportunity! Get a hold of some sort of clear flight peg. If you don't paint your minis anyway, it wouldn't matter if it's clear or not. Mine are below, deliberately cut from their bases with a hobby scalpel. (Sorry for the bad photo, they're at the back, it's the only photo of mine I can link to with Probe Droids in it).
