The Cargo Deck is actually below the primary deck, which is below the smaller deck with the shuttle and turret access.

Whoops. Good catch. That's what I meant to type, anyway

Here is a comparison between the SOLO Falcon and the FFG Falcon:

Not only the nose is longer, the antenna different and the turret is now singular. You also have completely different engines and the shield generators are much different. There are also tiny details like the docking bays or the trench along the ship are much cleaner.

Also, I've made this model with the proportions of the original Falcon in mind, but the version in the movie has different proportions. I'm guessing they tweaked it to make the exterior's size fit with the interior's size, in the new version the cockpit and the turret cilinder are smaller compared with the rest of the body.

Because the only thing that happened is they launched off a shuttle.

Yeah.

No repainting, replacing or removing of multiple armour panels, mounting new weapons, fixing up the space that the shuttle left in the ship, including presumbly closing off a door between it and the main crew areas, refitting the hyperdrive, etc etc etc.

I really, really don't understand your objection here. You seem to have decided you don't like this and retroactively found justification, and I really don't get why you decided you don't like it in the first place. It seems pretty cool to me, and it's far from without precedent in Legends-era lore.

Maybe see the movie before you decide it's terrible?

its already canon from George Lucas himself that the falcon appears mostly unmodified from the outside and that the episode 4 Falcon is the default appearance of a yt1300. the ship in the new movie is a retcon which doesn't make a lot of sense and kinda ruins the whole vibe and feel of the story... after-all Lando is wistful because it's his ship, not the junked remains of his ship.

Many fans don't like the direction Nu-wars has taken, and that's okay. when disney bought lucasfilm they didn't purchase our hearts and minds and i for one am unimpressed with the drivel they've produced(Rogue One aside). at this point they really have to wow me with a trailer before i spend another penny on a crap film. and Solo looks bad. maybe it wont be, but it looks seriously troubled as a film. and maybe selling out the integrity of the timeline wasnt the best way to get fans onboard.

imagine if they made a new firefly film where it was revealed that Malcom Reynolds was a Central planet spy the whole time, or if they made a new Lord of the Rings where the Orcs were the good guys. to a lot of us changing Star Wars well documented universe is that level of stupid. There are literally scenes in the films with 3 and 4 yt1300s all together looking same. so what, now they all just shot off their "miniships" and made the same alterations, then flew together to the same port? wtf

so yes, many of us have decided we dont like it before seeing it, the same way I decided that Micheal Bay TMNT is atrocious. and thats okay.

His incredulous "What did you do to my ship!?" more implies the latter than the former to be honest.

how? the schematics i have show one deck and a pressure hull, with only small storage compartments off the main ring. the whole ship is only about 14 feet thick at the widest part anyway. what "cargo deck" are you guys talking about?

eh I disagree. regardless its canon that the Falcon was manufactured without that weird front bit. check prequels, lucasarts schematic books, the EU and george lucas explanation for reference

We're referring to the Ghost. While some of what we are talking about is speculation, most of it feels right based on what we see in the show and the VCX's height of over 47 feet.

oh my bad. i thought you were saying the Falcon had a lower deck, which... no.

That sounds about right for the ghost. cargo door is a story, lower cockpit, upper cockpit, top deck, hull. thats a 5 story building

Yeah, the closest thing the Falcon has to different decks is the turrets.

Neither of these are remotely analogous. We're talking about a ship's design, not character traits. A closer analogy would be the majority of Firefly class transports showing up without their shuttles docked, but Serenity having both of hers. And... I'd be fine with that. Shuttles can be destroyed, sold off separately, and flown off separately; it's not exactly unlikely that a ship that comes with one as a default should routinely be seen without it.

Maybe the miniships are highly unreliable, break down a lot, and usually get discarded. Maybe they're just fragile and expensive to replace. Maybe they're an optional extra most people don't buy because they don't need them (something which was legends-canon anyway from the YT1300 Haynes Manual, but the mini-ship docked in the side of the YT1300, replacing one of the docking ports, rather than between the mandibles). Maybe THIS was a custom model and those ARE the defaults. Maybe the Solo Falcon plus miniship is a specific alteration for this job to make it NOT look like a stock YT1300 and add some capacity needed for whatever heist is happening in this movie (indeed, this seems the most likely explanation to me). Maybe the shuttles just aren't docked in those sequences, because they're off on some other mission.

There are SO many ways that half a second's imagination can explain why the previous YT1300s seen on screen can have had the form factor they had and this can have the form factor that it does and it can all still work fine and be perfectly explainable and sense-making.

Equally, it's fine if you don't want to give the movie a chance to explain itself and you decide it's rubbish based on still photos and a minute and a half of teaser trailer and a visceral reaction to something you find stupid. I will never understand why you do it, but you're welcome to do it.

Hey, thanks for pointing all this stuff out. It's stuff I knew, but a lot of others may not have.

This thread: they changed the Falcon, the movie sucks.

So why is everyone assuming the SOLO Falcon is the stock version when it’s obviously the luxury model with all the (legal) bells and whistles. Han stripped that thing down, added illegal guns, shields, snuggling compartments, and never cleaned the thing. Ever. Come on, Auto Bell is pretty cheap.

You know, this reminds me of another YT-1300 from the novels. I can't remember which one, but someone basicallycopied Han's modifications to the Falcon, but instead of concussion missile launchers on the front, they made a small launch rack for a modified A-wing.

That's Jarril's "Spicy Lady" from the book "The New Rebellion" (1996, 17 ABY).

I just happened to finish that book last week.
