Fun Gunboat lists? Only 1 Gunboat

By heychadwick, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi All,

I've been flying the Kimogila a lot with the recent wave, but I haven't used my Gunboat yet. I'm looking for a FUN list that doesn't have to be tournament level. Doesn't have to have Harpoon Missiles.

I only have one.

Good cannon builds? Good named guys?

Maybe something with a Tie Aggressor?

I’ve got a list set up with long range scanners, linked batteries and long ranged scanners to fly with Vessery.

If you are playing purely casual, then you can really just do whatever you like. The gunboat is an excellent ship for casual, because its extremely versatile with the option to run it with one of two titles or even no title at all. And any load-out you care to come up with will work 'well enough' for casual play.

If you want to be competitive, there are basically two builds that 'dominate:

Nu w/ Harpoon & LRS = 22

Rho w/ XG-1, HLC, linked, crack shot & LRS = 32

There are some other options that are essentially variations on these two that can also work. Such as Upgrading that Nu into a Rho to add crackshot (for 26 points). Or Dropping the HLC down to Mangler to make it a bit cheaper, or even dropping that Rho down to a Nu (and possibly going down to mangler) for even greater points savings.

If you have only one, you can also run it in a number of ways. It makes a good flanker, it can be used as a blocker, it can be a good decoy (because its got frightening firepower so opponents often gun for it first) or you can even use it in a straight-up jousting list alongside some defenders or whatever.

I take it you REALLY like those long range scanners?

I would add one more:

RHO- w/OS-1, PTL, Harpoon, adv SLAM. -32 pts

I like this build quite a bit:

Lieutenant Karsabi (24)
Wired (1)
"Mangler" Cannon (4)
Linked Battery (2)
Advanced SLAM (2)
XG-1 Assault Configuration (1)

Total: 34

I run it with the other named pilot and a TIE Aggressor.

I've tried this out and it makes a nice useful filler ship to accompany a couple of aces:

Nu Squadron Pilot (18)

  • XG-1 Assault configuration (1)
  • Jamming Beam (1) OR Tractor Beam (1)
  • Flechette Cannon (2)

Total = 22pts

The idea is to apply stress or jamming tokens to an enemy ship (or drag it in front of rocks/debris) and leave it more vulnerable for your aces next turn.

Lieutenant Karsabi (24)
Wired (1)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Linked Battery (2)
Long-Range Scanners (0)
XG-1 Assault Configuration (1)

Colonel Vessery (35)
Ruthlessness (3)
Tractor Beam (1)
TIE/D (0)

"Omega Leader" (21)
Juke (2)
Comm Relay (3)

Total: 100

HLC overall is a better cannon than Mangler, but isn't there an advantage for Karsabi to have a full range weapon so he can SLAM, take the stress to remove it, and still fire a shot at any range? Genuinely curious if that advantage outweighs having the better cannon upgrade.

Should be HLC

He can still fire primary weapon (3 dice at range 1) after slamming cause his ability removes the weapon disabled token. So he can always have a full range shot, slam or not.

Ha. I'm so used to SLAMing and reloading with the generics I forget that it's actually an option to just use your primary....

Double-Long Range Scanners: Your ship may acquire a Target Lock at the start of the next game after this one.

I thought it was for tournaments. You can target lock any ship on the table next to you. :D

Perfect for when you've already missed the cut, but your wingmate needs that MOV.
