A couple of Monk Questions?

By freybourne, in Talisman Rules Questions

The monk is not allowed to use weapons but what is actually considered a weapon?

We always play that a weapon is an attack object....... Sword, Axe,Flail,Dagger....ect.

But what about the Staff of Majesty? Techinally it is a weapon....it's a staff but you aren't really using it physically in the combat?

We play that the staff is an enchanted object and not a combat weapon so the Monk can use the weapon. Is this how everyone else plays?

Also, the Monk in our last game had low craft and only could cast one spell? (Thanks to me and the Rod of Ruin) a nasty little toy. Anyway, he drew a spell that enchanted a weapon. I forget what it was but it gave him +1 to a weapon. Can he cast the spell on his hands becasue techinaclly the Monks hands are his weapon or does he have to eat the spell for the whole game since he can never cast it becasue he is not allowed to use weapons?

Thanks,

Freybourne

I don't know, maybe the stuff with "Weapon" keyword gui%C3%B1o.gif ? Like the bolded word "Weapon" on Axe? If it has a Weapon keyword, it's a Weapon. Note that Monk can use Sword of Light (or Skull Wand if he is Neutral/Evil) in psychic combat, he is only prohibited from using weapons in battle.

Enchant Weapon is cast at the start of a turn, so you can use it on any Weapon you are carrying, you just won't get any benefit from it (Alchemy that weapon to gold before someone grabs it from you). I think he can also cast Bladesharp on a weapon when he is about to engage in battle (the casting time for Bladesharp), but just can't use the weapon he cast the spell on.

Dam, thanks for answering all my questions. I have a differenae of opinion on the Monk and I would like you to elaborate more. We always play that the Monk can't carry a weapon becasue it is illegal for him to use it but after hearing your arguement it makes sense. He can posses a weapon he just can't use it so cast the spell which will work on the weopen that he can't use but you get rid of the spell. Good idea.

But using an item such as the Sword of Life.... how is that not a weapon? I forget what the sword is called the Blade of ? it gives you two to your Craft. It's a sword? He can't use weapons. Although it's a different type of Combat it's still a battle. I don't understand why you say he can use it.

In the inner region we always play that all weapons are illegal in any roll that isn't combat. Example.. if you are going down the Strength Road the Unicorn gives you 1 to your Str. but Collosus gives you +2 to battle only. The Magic Belt gives you +1 to Str. but the Runesword gives you plus one to battle only.

In my opinion any weapon that the Monk uses to boost his Craft that has an Edge should be considered a weapon.

Please elaborate,

Freybourne.

"Characters may have cards that they are not permitted to use,
unless a given card specifically states otherwise. For example,
the Monk character may not use Weapons in battle but he
may have the Holy Lance in his possession to sell to the
Alchemist, deliver for a quest in the Warlock’s Cave, or simply
to prevent another character from picking it up." (p. 16)

Note that this is different when it comes to stuff you can't even have, like the Good Monk and Runesword. Monk can't even carry the Runesword with him (also on page 16).

Because it is NOT a battle.

"Attacks are split into two types: battles and psychic combats.
A battle occurs when a character is attacked by a creature
whose Strength is given, and a psychic combat occurs when
a character is attacked by a creature whose Craft is given." (p. 10)

Battle is a combat where both sides use Strength, here, Monk can't use Weapons (but gets +3 from his ability to add his Craft Value to Str). Psychic combat is combat with Craft, here the Monk (and Priest) can use Weapons to boost their Craft (Sword of Light, Bane Sword and Skull Wand if Neutral/Evil). Both specifically state they can't use Weapons in battle, no restriction on their use in psychic combat.
