Vancouver, BC Regionals Report

By Sekac, in X-Wing Battle Reports

The Wetcoast GT is always a great event and is one of my two "must attend" events each year. This year was no different, and I had a heck of a time. A big thank you to the event organizers and opponents making it a great weekend.

Game 1: Lowhhrick, Strezra, Captain Rex, Thane w/ Jyn/R5-P9. 100 points.

We deployed in opposite corners with a relatively loose field between us. I kept away for 3-4 turns to get Fenn and Lowhhrick into the corner and break up his formation on the rocks, while I attempted to race Poe around behind his formation where he could wreak havoc.

I coordinate-boosted Poe and pulled a 4K thinking he would've turned his formation to try to joust Poe, unfortunately he didn't turn his formation and they were able to turn the round after that, knowing Poe's options were limited. Poe shot Ezra for 4 hits which Lowhhrick used selflessness on. In turn Poe's shields were blown off and Ezra stressed him.

I tried to slip Poe past the formation with a 3 straight but my opponent accidentally jammed up his formation and barely moved so Poe couldn't clear, he got snapped shotted with stress so I couldn't coordinate and Poe died. The best possible scenario for my opponent was a complete accident. Oh well.

The rest of the game was just a formality but Fenn got stressed and dragged down while Lowhhrick ran to preserve MoV.

Loss: 0-69

Game 2: VI original Han, BB-8/Intensity Poe. 100 points.

I deployed Lowhhrick on the right side and my opponent put his Poe in the center and Han set up to joust. I set up to joust with Han and moved aggressively, content to let his Poe flank me. His Poe was a little bit cheaper than mine so I knew if I could get Han, I'd almost certainly win on points.

Turn 2 Han moved 4 straight, hoping to block Poe, but he was about a centimeter short. All 3 ships had him at range 1 and tore into Han pretty good. Turn 3 I coordinated a TL on Poe and Talon rolled him. Fenn and Poe had range 1 shots on Han and killed him.

After that, Fenn was able to hot-cop Poe to keep intensity face down while my Poe hunted and killed his.

Win: 100-0

When pairings were posted for game 3, I had moved down a few tables. "Odd." I thought. "Must be arbitrary numbering. I'll inquire after this game..."

Game 3: Poe (same as mine), LW Dash. 98 points.

I spread the obstacles out to keep Dash from being too cute. I deployed in a corner, Dash deployed parallel to his board edge, and his Poe deployed in the opposite corner from me. I slow rolled, not worried about Dash building up Rey tokens, I'd rather that than give him a chance to slip behind my formation. His Poe moved aggressively up the flank so I turned towards him. His Poe bailed, not wanting to take my formation on while Dash cut in to get range. I knew Poe was gonna bail so I turned towards Dash, hot-copped his Rey focus, and blew his shields off with some friendly die rolls.

"Finish your dinner, or no dessert." That's what they say. The wise move is to finish off Dash. Here's the problem. His Poe costs as much as mine and he had a 2 point bid to my 1 (I really wish I could drop a point with this list). If I kill Dash and he kills Fenn and Lowhhrick, then I lose on points. I can't let his Poe make it to the end game.

My opponent ran with Dash as I knew he would/should. I bumped Lowhhrick in place, turned Fenn towards Dash, and turned my Poe towards his, with no way to avoid a debris the next turn. The trap worked perfectly. Poe moved in, thinking he'd be behind my formation, and he had to boost to shed the lock my Poe put down. He was in range 1 of all of my ships. Hot-cop, Poecus, and Wookiees provided enough offense to drop Poe in one turn! Phew!

After that Fenn and Lowhhrick pursued Dash while Poe circled around to head Dash off. Dash eventually managed to drag Fenn down but drained all of his Reys in the process. Poe came in and cleaned it up.

Win: 100-26

I was feeling pretty good overall, the first match was a tough matchup and kind of flukey, but I felt I was bouncing back well. But I started to have this nagging feeling so I asked Jonas at the judge's table if I could please look at my result sheet from round 2.

I had marked it as a 0-100 loss . My heart sank. There was no fixing it. Pairings were done and the next round had been played. With as many people as we had, only two or three 4-2s make it and my first two rounds had a cumulative 31 MoV. I'd basically have to string together 3 100-0 wins in a row to even have a shot at making the cut.

I called myself many terrible names and had a few beers for lunch.

I'll post the second half later.

I should probably finish this out since the community is absolutely clamoring for the conclusion. I'm sorry about the delay, I just finished up my 3 week run of Vancouver, Portland System Open, and Seattle regional. Throw in a little work, school, alcohol, and procrastination and here we are, with me trying to recall what the **** I even faced for the rest of the day.

Game 4: Strezra, Nora, and Lowhrick. Don't remember how many points

I thought of a new opening in the game and decided to try it out. I deployed Lowhhrick and Fenn to joust his formation with Poe about range 3 away. As he moved to joust, I turned away, boosted Fenn with FAA and coordinated a boost with Poe and a 4 straight. The next turn I coordinated a boost straight again and a 3 turn with Poe, which put him in a great flanking position--out of both the Ezra and Nora's double arcs.

I managed to drop Nora surprisingly quickly but lost Fenn in the process. Poe chased after Ezra and dragged him down eventually, and we had some hot Lowhhrick on Lowhhrick action which mine won, because wookiee commandos are frankly better than tactician/Rey IMO. Once Rey runs out, he has no mods, and Auzies are predictable enough that avoiding tacticians isn't hard.

Win: 100-26

Game 4: Fearlessness Boba, VI Asajj with title and buckets of drugs.

I liked my opening from the last game so much that I did it again. It worked but I was just barely at range 2 from Boba (we needed a judge call) and Poe did no damage. In fact, damage was really soft on both sides for the first few turns, it was really weird. Boba is supposed to hit like a ton of bricks but red dice were chilly early.

I got Boba down to one hull and I think no got Asajj to half, but had to sell out in the process and lost everyone.

Loss: 50ish-100

This loss officially eliminated me from contention.

Game 6: The self-pity beers of the day and time passed have made my memory of this game fuzzy. Han and...Lowhhrick? Poe? I don't remember.

I feel like a jerk for not remembering this game better, but I know I was able to kill Han near the end of the game and that my Poe survived. I won but I don't remember how much I won by.

At the end of the event, I was officially 3-3 and somewhere in the high 50s. I did the math, and if I hadn't screwed up that result sheet, I would've been 24th and still missed the top 16, so no harm, no foul. Except it is a foul because it was really ******* stupid.

So that the big lesson from this event: Filling out result sheets correctly is at least as important as playing well.

Dont be like me, dear readers. Be better.

I felt pretty bad when we pulled your result slip out and saw that it had indeed been filled out wrong. I didn't get much of a chance to chat in Seattle, but we'll catch up if we run into each other in Bellingham.

Don't feel bad, I'm usually my own worst enemy in some way or another. Just bring salt tokens the next time you come down to clobber us. I wanted to buy some off Calen, but I had no cash.

Also, we were kicking around the idea of organizing a tournament at the border sometime. The idea of wargames under the peace arch tickles me pink!
