Imperial Assault is an amazing game and will be for quite some time

By Fourtytwo, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Yep, just felt the need to say that, because it's pretty obvious.

I know quite a few gamers and tabletop wargamers here in Germany and some neighbouring countries, many of which I meet at least once, often twice or even more often a year for an intense whole weekend of miniatures-gaming.

After painting up over 30 minis for Imperial Assault - and I still continue to purchase and paint - I introduced those gamers to Imperial Assault, organized tutorials for learning the game, and even designed a few missions and narrative scenarios of my own. And guess what - everyone loved the game, I have more and more gamers lining up for games in upcoming conventions I will attend, and some have bought the core game and are now going into expansions or plan to do so.

I can't remember the last time I taught a game to people (and I did - both privately and as an ambassador of sorts) and it was met with such excitement, it's really great. I now plan on organizing Imperial Assault gaming days in a local game store where I can introduce people to the game and/or just have fun with other gamers in the area who already enjoy the game.

Maybe this thread is pointless, but I somehow felt the need to counterbalance the current doom and gloom with some positivity based on my own experiences with this game.

Feel free to chime in, if you feel like it, and tell us why this game is great in your experience, or tell my why I'm too optimistic and why doom and gloom gets more attention in this fancy attention economy that is the information age. :D

I think you're 100% right! IA is far and away my favorite game ever. Of any type.

I enjoy the Campaign quite a lot, but my main love is for Skirmish play. And especially right now, when the competitive meta is wide open and we're seeing the classic pieces like Vader, Palpatine, Luke, Han, and Chewie being used a lot. I've gone into a lot of detail on this in other posts, so I'll just summarize here: I think IA has it all: that Star Wars "feel," smooth mechanics, variety in competitive play, etc. I'd rather play a IA Skirmish event than any other activity, any day of the week!

Within two weeks we have +60 people in Barcelona for our regional.

Last year there were 40. The year before 20.

There’s no secret: good organization, fellowship and willing to teach others from 0. I know a lot of people who has started playing IA during last year and they love it.

I can say with no doubt IA has the better community among all Star Wars games and that’s more important than anything.

It seems with IA the competitie community is quite small but close knit and full of great people. I'd rather have a smaller, friendly group to enjoy the game with than what you deal with on the x-wing forum...

My problem is that there is basically no community in my area lol. I put my best foot forward and tried real hard to build one, but fell short. I no longer have the time to organize things on my own and for whatever reason my LGS doesn't organize events they just expect their player base to do all the work so here I sit.

As far as campaign goes I'm lucky to have a few close friends that enjoy the game as much as I do and are ready and willing to play multiple times a month. So I will always get to experience that part of it. I just wish I could be more active in the skirmish community.

Vassal is great but it's not the same, I enjoy being there in person using my painted physical components I spent so much time and money on. One of these year I'll have to make a trip down for worlds.

But to make sure this post ends positively, this game really is amazing. Ffg nailed the thematic feel with this game. Every time we set it up, get the Star Wars sound track going in the background, pour a crisp IPA and start rolling the dice time just flys by. Before I know it it's 3 am and we've only played two missions but had a blast. Love this game so much.

I left X-wing because there were not enough iconic ships/characters to my liking. I also left because there was so much blatant cheating. I'm a stickler for rules, so this game makes more sense for me. It's way more structured which absolutely satisfies my OCD! LOL :P

It would be cool to see you at Worlds, but you should definitely come to Toronto for a Regional or Nationals some time. Our community loves guests and takes care of them well. I met @Kenseventy at Worlds and he's flying from Winnipeg to stay with me downtown so that we can hit up Michigan and Ontario Regionals.

Just out of curiosity (and sorry in advance for the off-topic post) but is there anybody else from the forums going to the Canadian nats this year? I've only just started skirmishing, but it hooked me pretty good and I'm making the flight out to Toronto in March. It would be nice to be able to put a few faces to (user)names.

I'm the T.O. so you'll definitely meet me, but you'll see cleardave and robertpolson for sure. I'm not sure who else on here is someone I know but I think a few more .

Should be good, Hopefully I can win an extra set of dice to offset the cost of flying out there!
