Believe me constant whining of nerd herders on this forum got nothing to do with "real" X-Wing in material world - in my LGS for example we have explosion of new players, all of us play competetively, try meta lists and no one whines about some silly things that local forum nerd-herders whine. Vocal whining minority consists more often than not from armchair experts, they don't find the pleasure in this game, only satisfaction for them comes through constant whining.
Oh I don't worry about it and I'm fully aware people are very rarely judgemental about lists. I have a conspiracy theory that the majority of horror story tournament players you read online are fabrications by people who don't play games competitively.
The "that guy" tournament stereotype is sooo rare that focusing on it on any level beyond when it's actually happening is a waste of time and energy. I always come away from tournaments feeling recharged and enthusiastic about the game and brimming with ideas for new lists to try.
I've always found that when I'm feeling the worst about the state of X-wing usually coincides with the largest amount of time since I've been able to play a larger tournament and I've got nothing but the forums to fill the void.
But I digress. The example I gave was just a hypothetical about the risk of trying too hard to figure out what a list choice tells you about a person. It tells you something, just not as much as it's easy to think. This is why being concerned what people think about it is pointless.
And if someone did have a problem with a list choice I took to Vancouver, then I'd just flip them an acrylic salt token we all got for door swag at the regional ![]()
