I see that the rule set that comes with the core box is referred to as the learn to play booklet. I wonder if they will release an actual book down the road?

Strange that it seems it will not. The Learn to Play booklet specifically states that the Rules Reference is available online. Different from every other FFG game I've seen, and not sure what the advantage is other than maybe giving them control over tournament/competitive rules and errata in a single place.

It says to check an online Rules Reference for additional terrain rules, so looks like they aren't including that type of rulebook this time. Which does make it easier for them to update it so they don't need to change the book in later printings of Core boxes when/if the rules change from FAQ/errata.

Can't read it but there appears to be elevation rules!

Although it could just be climbing rules...

it basically just says refer to online rules

Interesting things I've found:

  • Clambering and Climbing Hooks are specifically mentioned as rules included for custom terrain. In other words, out of the box and with only the box contents, these will have no effect.
  • There is a Standby action that will let troopers split up their actions, as long as they haven't attacked yet. It's triggered (optionally) when an enemy unit comes within range 2.
  • If no other minis from a unit are in LoS, the unit leader can be the target of an attack and be removed if the attack exceeds the wound threshold. You just "field promote" another mini to unit leader by swapping out their physical minis.

BoLS unboxing shows that the previously unknown third comms upgrade in the speeder bike expansion is an extra Comms Jammer card

wtf?

I mean it's great they kept to the "you only need your faction", but what sense is there in including 2 when you're rarely going to see it used but included on the heavies? On the flip side, this only strengthens my case that 2x cores is a smart buy..... especially if you haven't chosen a faction yet or want both sides.

This is how they’ve done it with Legend of the Five Rings. The box comes with a getting started guide, but the full rules are available online. Star Wars: Destiny also now follows the same format so I can see this is the way going forward. It enables them to update when necessary without invalidating too much printed material.

Looks like I will be attempting to magnetize the weapons on the AT-RT. If the unboxing video is to be believed, looks like the weapons don't even have a slot on the mini for insertion.

Hey there! I've tried it with some 2mm (diameter) magnets (1mm thick) and it works great :)

Cool, glad to hear! I should have some of those still kicking around in my hobby supplies... Regardless, it looks like magnetization is going to be a very good idea for some many Legion vehicles.

Have I missed it, or has anyone said the exact contents of the box? As in how many of each upgrade and all that good stuff?

The Bell of Lost Souls video goes through them very well. Looks like 4x targeting scopes, 4x Concussion grenades, 2x of every neutral force power... basically enough cards for every unit in the box, or for a perfectly even split of cards and units for two people.

They stated at Gencon that the rrg would be a living document online

There is a full rules reference but it will be pdf only.

Did you just drill some shallow holes and glue the magnets in there with super glue?

Hi! I didn’t drill any holes; I just stuck them down with superglue. You might like to chop a couple of millimetres off the shaft of the gun to compensate for the extra length added by the two magnets though. :)

Another option is to use a small nail on one part and a magnet on the other. That way you don't have to worry about the polarity of the magnets.

Thanks!

How do you think you'd do it for something like the ATST where you can see the attach points if you don't have the weapon on there?

One option might be to glue a piece of thin metal onto the side of the AT-ST to which the magnetized weapon to attaches. I'm sure someone will make a tutorial once the kit is released.

Beasts of War also released a Let’s Play along with their boxing. Interested to see if they use the full rules with suppression etc or if it’ll be more of the same restricted demo rules.

Edit: Ugh I’m like five mins in and they’re already getting a bunch of stuff wrong

If you read the comments and not just watched the video the guys playing in the video commented that they only just received the NDA the previous night and that many of the rules reference the website for the core book which is still not available so they only really had the basic starter rules FFG usually has but NOT the full set of rules. That does not mean they could not have been better prepared, but they did their best under the time constraints given to them.

And they prefaced the video with “we’re still learning”. I get that it’s a new rule system to them and completely understand making mistakes.

That being said, many of their mistakes were due to just not reading the cards sitting in front of them. Rolling 5 dice for the Z6 the entire game, giving four units orders with Standing Orders, giving Vader three actions all at once with Implacable, adding both heavies to the trooper units, etc has nothing to do with only having access to the Learn to Play guide and more to do with just not paying attention.

When there’s several blatant rules errors packed into the first ten mins of a Let’s Play video it’s kind of frustrating and at a certain point becomes a misrepresentation of game mechanics. I’d be peeved if I was FFG and a tabletop gaming channel I partnered with released a rushed, error-filled demo of one of my new flagship games.

This. Did getting the NDA the night before prevent them from at least reading through the rules to familiarize themselves, since they presumably knew they were going to get it eventually? Additionally, it seems the basic rules are all in the Learn to Play book, so only the more advanced rules should be on the online Rules Reference, so as FFG I would be extra annoyed by them blaming the lack of online resources. Basic things such as movement, shooting, and force construction should be covered for a simple learning game. As well, the whole 1 icon = 1 upgrade of that type rule is also present in X-Wing and Armada, so it is not a new concept for FFG games.

Let's play videos like this one are the only way at least some potential customers will get a preview of the game. Not everyone has a FLGS, or at least not an FLGS that will get the Demo kit.
