Inspiring Recruit - 3 Scenarios

By Innese, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Alright, just as a quick preface to all 3 Scenarios, Ship #1 has two stress tokens, and the Inspiring Recruit crew.

Scenario 1

Ship #1 executes a white maneuver, ending up at range 1-2 of Ship #2, which has the Kanan Jarrus crew. Kanan reads: "Once per round, after a friendly ship at Range 1-2 executes a white maneuver, you may remove 1 stress token from that ship." My question is does this then trigger Inspiring Recruit, allowing for a second stress to be removed?

What I think: Yes. Inspiring Recruit reads: " Once per round, when a friendly ship at Range 1-2 removes a stress token, it may remove 1 additional stress token." In this case, Ship #2 is removing a stress (Inspiring Recruit doesn't say the ship has to remove it from itself) from Ship #1 using Kanan, which should trigger Inspiring Recruit to remove a second.

Scenario 2

Ship #2 is Epsilon Leader and starts combat at Range 1 of Ship #1. Epsilon Leader's ability reads as: "At the start of the Combat phase, remove 1 stress token from each friendly ship at Range 1." Does this then trigger Inspiring Recruit, allowing for a second stress to be removed?

What I think: Yes. Again, this is Ship #2 removing stress from Ship #1, which should trigger Inspiring Recruit to remove a second.

Scenario 3

Essentially the same as Scenario 2, except Ship #2 has the Wingman EPT, which reads as: "At the start of the Combat phase, remove 1 stress token from another friendly ship at Range 1. " Does this trigger Inspiring Recruit?

What I think: Yes. Once again, this is Ship #2 removing stress from Ship #1, which should trigger Inspiring Recruit to remove a second.

You are overcomplicating it, since inspiring recruit doesn't really care who triggers the stress removal on whom.

The expression "a friendly ship at range 1-2" includes the 'own' ship. That is, inspiring recruit makes anyone who removes a stress at range 1-2 to remove an extra token, including 'himself'. Once per round.

However, if the expression were "Another friendly ship" it would not include the 'own' ship.

So, yes to all scenarios.

Yes but its not the ship that Inspiring Recruit is on that is removing the stress, its a different ship that is remove the stress from the other ship.

It doesn’t matter. Inspiring recruit will always work regardless of who removes stress from whom.

If anyone (friendly) removes a stress token at range 1-2, no matter the trigger or the ship, Inspiring recruit allows it to remove an extra stress token.

Yeah, it's pretty straightforward. Basically, Inspiring Recruit says that when a ship is removing stress (whether from itself or from a buddy), once per turn, you can strip an extra stress token (from wherever it's pulling from). It's worth noting that with these kinds of effects, it's not necessarily the ship that HAD the stress tokens that's doing the removal... rather, it's the ship that is carrying the stress-removing effect. This is usually irrelevant, but something to consider for effects like Kyle Katarn (crew).

Given the Kyle Katarn rulings, my understanding is that Kanan/Wingman/Epsilon Leader is the ship removing the stress. If they at range 1-2 of Inspiring Recruit, even if the ship they're removing stress from isn't at Range 1-2 of Inspiring Recruit, Kanan/Wingman/Epsilon Leader can remove an additional stress.

Ship 1 gas Kanan and 1 stress and Inspiring recruit.

Ship 2 has 2 stress

Assume all conditions of cards are met (e.g. ranges).

If Ship 2 does a white manuever Kanan removes 1 stress from Ship 2.

Did Ship 1 remove the stress so the second stress removed comes off of Ship 1?

OR

Did Ship 2 remove the stress so the second stress comes off Ship 2?

None of the above. Who is removing the stress if not relevant here.

Inspiring Recruit does not remove stress, ever. Inspiring Recruit increases the stress removal of another effect.

If ship 2 does a white manoeuvre, ship 1 may trigger Kanan Jarrus to remove a stress from ship 2, and then trigger Inspiring Recruit to make Kanan Jarrus remove 2 stress rather than 1.

Ship 1 is removing the stress, but nothing in this situation affects the stress on ship 1.

" Once per round, when a friendly ship at Range 1-2 removes a stress token, it may remove 1 additional stress token. "

"Once per round, after a friendly ship at Range 1-2 executes a white maneuver, you may remove 1 stress token from that ship. "

Kanan removes the stress, recruit causes him to remove 2.

The tricky interaction is Kanan/Kyle

"After you remove a stress token from your ship, you may assign a focus token to your ship. "

Kanan removing stress off white manoeuvres only triggers Kyle if he's on the same ship with Kanan and the stress Kanan is removing is as well.
