Acrylic rulers and templates

By Kyle Ren, in X-Wing

Hi there FFG and FFG forum members, just wondering if it would be possible to get an acrylic ruler/template expansion product. These are sort of a neccesary for anyone playing the game for the long-term, but it's unrealistic to expect everyone to place in the top 16 of a regional tournament (or whatever you need to do to win those, not super familiar with that).

It's ok to just expect the second-hand market to fill this void for casual play, but if I, for example, want to go to a higher-level tournament, I have to have an "official FFG product", of which there is none for these acrylic templates and rulers. My own personal playstyle means I'm unlikely to place highly in such a tournament, because I philosophically disagree with just flying whatever other people say is "best". So it's unlikely with the current method that I'll ever get my hands on "official" FFG acrylics.

Just saying, it would be nice to even the playing field a little for this.

Top 4 regionals actually. :)
And they not all the same size :D

Though my cardboard ones are still working fine. Some of the players who won several of the regional template sets are still using their cardboard sets. As FFG allows for third party sets, you can just buy one of those anyway. Precision of the micro art studio and cogotwo seem rather well. (I have the range ones from cogotwo and my wife is using the micro art studios templates)

Magic Works Games seems to produce rather nice ones too.

Legal Products

Players must use only official Star Wars: X-Wing™ Miniatures Game components in tournament play, with the following exceptions for third-party replacements:

• Non-essential tokens (see “Tokens” on page 9)

• Range rulers that match the dimensions of an official range ruler or a particular section of an official range ruler

• Movement templates that match the dimensions of official maneuver templates

You can use third-party templates at a tournament.

What doesn't make sense (to me) is that you cannot use third party bomb tokens, a rule that came about because Fantasy Flight Games catastrophically failed at matching the dimensions of the cluster mine tokens.

All the third party vendors measure the bloody cardboard ones down to the micrometer to ensure accuracy...I have some third party ones and they're more accurate in size to the cardboard ones than anything I have from FFG. Almost all the FFG ones are a millimeter wider than the cardboard tokens (proxy mines, seismic charges, proton bombs...)

Third party acrylic maneuver templates are quite often more accurate to the original cardboard than FFG acrylic.

Third party acrylic maneuver templates are better made and are 100% legal in all tournaments; up to and including nationals and worlds.
