The Red Keep and Kneeling influence

By garathkane, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Quick clarification to make sure I was playing the card right.

The Red Keep - 3 influence

When knelt for an effect that requires 1 influence - like Forever burning (Kneel 1 influence or pay 2 gold to return Forever Burning from your dead pile to your hand.), can you use the extra influence?

The way I interpreted it is you have to KNEEL 1 influence to play the card. If Red keep is your only source of influence, once it's knelt, you cannot bring Forever Burning back from the dead with the remainder influence because you cannot kneel it again.

However, can the 2 unused influence pay the cost for another card like Poisoned Wine (Kneel 1 influence to move Poisoned Wine to another eligible character) when the cost is paid for Forever Burning? The influence is knelt and there is some left over. I'm torn on that one. In the FAQ (3.3) it states "When a cost is paid for an effect, the same cost cannot be applied to a different effect." However, the example given specifically refers to a single influence being used to pay for two effects. In this case it's 3 influence for 2 (or 3) effects. It's just knelt once though.

Thanks guys.

Don't forget to check the basic rules as well as the FAQ when you're looking for some of these things (everyone does). From pg. 7 of the Core Rules where the influence scroll is defined:

"When an event or triggered ability requires you
to kneel a certain amount of influence, you must
kneel characters or locations that provide at least
that much total influence. Any remaining influence
you kneel is lost.
This means you cannot
save influence that was 'overpaid' after kneeling
an influence-providing card to pay for an effect."

So is you kneel the Red Keep, paying 3 influence, for an effect that costs only 1, that extra 2 influence is just plain gone. Said another way, you cannot "pre-pay" for effect #2 when initiating effect #1.

Ah, I DID forget to check the basic rules. Thanks ktom. That clears it right up.
