New player - looking to start Skirmish (at Regionals?)

By dysartes, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Afternoon all,

I've owned a few bits of Imperial Assault for a while now - mainly to paint - but I'm looking into getting into the gaming side of things. I know there's a semi-local tournament coming up towards the end of the month, with a very local Regionals the week after, and I was considering using those as a way of dipping my toe into the Skirmish water.

I'll include below what I've picked up so far, but I was hoping to get answers to two questions:

  1. Do I own everything I'd need to enter these events in terms of rules, tokens, etc?
  2. Do I have the makings of a usable - if unexciting - Scum or Imperial list here? I'd normally push for the Alliance, but I've not painted too much of their stuff yet :)

Any other advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks for your time.

Owned:

  • Imperial Assault
  • Twin Shadows
  • Boba Fett
  • Bossk
  • C-3PO & R2-D2
  • Chewbacca
  • Dengar
  • Greedo
  • IG-88
  • Agent Blaise
  • Captain Terro
  • Han Solo
  • Kayn Somos
  • Lando Calrissian

To play in a tournament you need the map tiles to play in the maps in the rotation. Right now, you need the core set and jabbas palace (or you could buy the game maps, but jabbas isn't much more and it comes with a bunch of fun pieces). Based on what you own, I'd recommend buying a Jawa villain pack as well. This will give you access to IG-88's upgrade. He's a monster at the moment. You can then build a very solid merc list.

The Jawa pack will give you the IG fix. HOTE includes the fix for Vader, Han, and Chewie.

Right now Imperial power centers around Vader, Palp, and the HOTE expansion.

If you are getting Jabba for the pieces and Scum figures, then definitely get the jawa, it's just a single so not bad price wise.

With the IG fix and Jabba's realm you can make a scum hunter list that is highly competitive, and fun to play.

You have more than enough to play this game. However, if you're looking for a competitive list, you'd at least need Heart of the Empire, since it has fixes for overcosted figures like Han, Chewy, and Vader. The Fix for IG-88 came with the Jawa expansion.

The issue is that I firmly believe that the majority of winning lists have a big hitter like Chewy, Han or Jedi Luke for the Rebels, IG-88 for the Mercenaries, and Vader for the Imperials.

With what you have, how about this:

Bossk - 8 pts

Greedo - 4 pts (mandatory for any scum lists as far as I'm concerned)

Elite Tusken Raiders - 7 pts

Regular Tusken Raiders - 5 pts

Temporary Alliance - 1pt

Gideon - 3pts

C-3PO - 2pts

Elite Trandoshans - 10 pts

For a command deck focus on hunter cards and cards that can work for anyone. include take initiative for sure.

That's 7 activations. Use Greedo and a tusken or two to grab objectives/fight. use Bossk, the tuskens and trandoshans to fight. use Gideon and Threepio to focus up figures and generally support. Play conservatively as you don't really have a lot of range, unless Greedo is focussed. Cause a blood bath on round 2 or 3 and you could steal a few.

If not, you can use printed maps for non-premiere tournaments (which is anything below Nationals).
Search above for the Imperial Assault Printable Skirmish Map Project thread to find out how to print them.

Thanks for the initial input - I know Jawa Scavenger is in a couple of my LGS, and I'm talking to one of them about a second-hand copy of Jabba's Realm.

Out of interest, what is the fix to IG-88?

Image result for IG88 fix

He won't have Hunter cards unless he buys Jabba's Realm.

Can you make a list to play with what you have? YES.

Will it be competitive? Probably not, bit you'll still have fun

Agreed. Without the hunter cards for scum it won't be very competitive.

But the skirmish game play and style of IA is awesome. You'll have fun no matter what.

HotE and JR both have a lot of things thar propelled skirmish into a more balanced playing experience. There are a lot of new figures and cards that are hard to ignore. There are more archetypes than those discussed here in this post but the scum hunters lists are the easiest to pick up and play because they hide a lot of errors. Spies, droids, smugglers even creatures all make a fantastic and fun themed lists but are harder to master

If you can grab a copy of JR and a jawa, you should have plenty of material to make a really solid scum list. If not, you’ll still have a blast.

You could make a solid rebel list if you can borrow the upgrade fixes for Han/Chewie, but you’ll be lacking some good Smuggler command cards from JR.

I did initially consider - without looking at the cards - whether a Bounty Hunter All-Stars list would work.

The idea amused me, but I haven't run the numbers to see if it fits in 40 points ;)

Morning all,

Follow-up question - I was reading through the Tournament Regulations document, and it lists three maps (and associated mission cards) as needed components to have with you at an event. However, while it lists the map names (Jabba's Palace, Nal Hutta Swamps and Mos Eisley Back Alleys), it doesn't say where those maps can be found.

I've checked the material in Jabba's Realm, core and Twin Shadows, but those maps don't seem to be mentioned in there (which may just mean I'm missing something - it happens) - are these maps from the reference sheets for particular Ally/Villain packs, and, if so, from which ones? Failing that, is there a list of Skirmish maps and where you can find them somewhere?

Thanks for your help.

EDIT - Never mind, found it eventually. Alliance Rangers, Jabba the Hutt and Jawa Scavenger. But, still - would it kill FFG to include that information in the Tournament Pack? Seven words and three sets of () to make things easier for new players...

Glad you found it, but yeah, that can take a while. My first tournament was a store championship in August 2017. Like you, I had spent some time figuring out where to get the maps, etc., then I learned the week before that the rotation of maps had changed.

It's good to double-check the FFG website for the official rotation as you prepare -- sometimes those announcements are easy to miss. FFG often DOES sell the maps separate from the packs for $20-25 ... which is pricey, but if you know you'll never use Alliance Rangers or something, it can save you a lot of setup time! There's also a great thread in this forum called the Printable Maps Project with details about how to inexpensively print practice mats for one-step setup. Some tournament directors will quietly allow their use because it saves so much time, but generally you're expected at a minimum to own the FFG tile pieces required for each map if you show up at a regionals tournament.

May the Force be with you in the tournament scene!

Thanks dude - I'm going to run the list suggested above this week (assuming I get Gideon painted in time), so just need to assemble my Command deck.

Should be an interesting experience :)

I mean, I'm pretty sure painted figures roll better hits than unpainted, but definitely bring Gideon regardless! Cheers. : )

Maybe I didn't paint my figures properly, because I've not noticed an uptick since painting haha.

Hmm. We'd better make sure we get paired up next tournament then Pudge ... maybe your guys can learn from mine. You know. Like, after the round ... ;D

Well, managed to get Gideon to a tabletop standard last night, so the team is ready for Saturday. Pretty happy with them, especially Bossk, Greedo & C-3PO.

Great job mate, hope you have a great time!

Great paint jobs!

As the Fett said great paint job, you'll at least have an impressive looking squad!

Word to the wise, don't get discouraged, no matter what happens. I got my _______ handed to me in my first tourney, but man I learned so much.

Good Luck!

Ditto that -- I think my first tourney squad had Mak and Loku in it, along with Leia and ESabs. My "big hitters" were Echo Base Trooper elites, and I had this half-cocked notion to get extra shots with them through Leia. I kept games close through a crazed focus on objectives, but also became clear that I was way out-figured.

Dice? was it Dice that were handed to you in your first tourney?
