Regionals data Feb 10, 2018

By Baltanok, in Star Wars: Armada

Does anyone know if the Worlds invite gets passed down if the winner already has an invite?

Edited by Cod

The bye certainly does. I'm not sure on the guaranteed spot.

Big thanks to Ray in 5th, who had only played about 6 proper games before the day. If he hadn't kept Gideon to a 6-5 in the first game, he would have been the winner instead of me

With the exception that Miles had Lando instead of Bail due to us raising the Raddis issue before kick off.

So close yet so far :) well done

Anyone going to Glendale, AZ or Toronto, ON? If so, please try to get me the lists.

Also, I don't have dates for Pacific Rim or European regionals. Forgive me if I'm missing your local regionals, but I would like your data as well.

Thanks!

Here is a list of the German regionals that i know.

You already saw the list from the Ewok open . I might be able to give the list from Potsdam as well, when i get them from the TO. Not sure about the last two. I am not sure if i will be there.

There are 3 player with all wins?
This is the biggest part that i don't like on the Armada system. It is really not fair in this part. 22 player and 3 rounds are way to few rounds. Especially when some used a bye. One lucky win with a 10-1 will extremly affect the results. Without any chance for the second player to do anything about it (unless winning 10-1 as well, but this is not always in his hand).

Compare our regional last weekend where the first had 21 points, it is really a strange compare. The 4th from this one would have won other tournaments with the points.
And being second with 26 points is hard as well.

I accept it due to the time it takes to play rounds, but yeah I had my second undefeated regional where I placed 4th last weekend. Both times I took a bye first round and couldn't play catch up enough.. beat the tourney winner Xero 6-5 in the final round, but we both knew I needed a 7-4 to pass him at 1st place so we toilet bowled, and forced me to charge in recklessly for a shot, and barely (thanks to a horrible Demo side arc attack that did 2 damage total to my Demo) I was able to still pull of a 19 MOV win. It was a great game and had a blast, I would have done the same thing as Xero if scores were reversed.

I was at the Toronto event. Overall, my impressions were the list variance was very wide, with LOTS of large ships and some builds with 2 large ships! Obviously this is very close to launch so we're not sure what will stay in use but it sure looks like large ships are in a good place. There were also quite a few squadless or builds with low squad counts. Still lots and lots of aces though, but that's Star Wars, right?

Looking through the lists, the variance was huge. Only 3 lists didn't have a large base. I played against 2 Radus and 2 Dodonna fleets.

I played the 4th place list and chose his hyperspace assault, he had 1 GR75 and Six squads on deployment, it was crazy.

I was impressed with the diversity in Toronto this weekend. I was also surprised not to see and Yavaris/Gallent Haven or Ackbar Super Pickles.

Spending about 50 points on 2 Decimators was probably not the best call on my part. They had some glorious moments, but died in almost all my games.

I had an epic match against Thraug in round 3, whose Cymoon tagged mine for 11 damage and 2 accuracies in one shot!

I think I only saw two nebs being played,

I only played one yavaris all day, and the pickles I faced were all kitted out in pretty diverse ways.

Toronto players don't need to rely on power combos! I mean a 3 ship list without a large base won the day!??

I was decimated by your Decimators! During the building of my fleet I evaluated the squads in multiples that I couldn't easily mow down and came up with 2: VCXs and Decimators. I figured I could ignore the little damage I would get from VCXs, and no one ever plays Ghost or Decimators, so I dismissed them! Your Decimators melted my Raiders and finished my ISD. I think I was your only opponent that didn't kill your Decimators! :( . Who plays multiple Deicmators!!?!
Crazy fun games.

At least your weren't the highest damage I hit with one shot. I hit something for 12 damage and 2 accuracies, ... medium range!

I didn't think this was possible - you can't start with no Admiral in play can you?

Or is the timing: before deploying use Raddus to set aside the MC-75, then use HA to set aside the MC-30. Deploy GR-75. Start of round 2, hyperspace in the MC-30 using HA then at start of round 3 you can now use Raddus to bring in the MC-75?

Raddus and Hyperspace drop-ins use the same timing, so you can drop raddus and then have raddus allow a ship drop in the same round.

You can start with no Admiral in play.

As long as you deploy Raddus first with the Hyperspace Assault Rule, its legal... And if at any time, you have no ships on the board, you lose, even if the rest are still in Hyperspace.

But Raddus cannot deploy his Raddus' Hidden ship unless he is on the Table.

In fact, if you do that, you can bring it all in the same turn, as the FAQ has stated that "start of turn" things basically are allowed even if they were just deployed then...

So turn two... Boom. Raddus Goes Down. Profundity goes down. Ship comes out of Profundity. You go from 1 ship to 4 ships on the board.

Yeah, he played it correctly with the timing. All legal and above board.

Dost I see-eth justly? In Toronto, 2 lists in the top 4 had only 3 activations? That is music to my list designing soul.

Albeit that it takes a lot of skill, but that opens up a lot of list ideas that previously seemed impossible by watching the overall meta from 'a certain point of view'.

So I have finished my long trek back home from AZ last night, and am now sitting down to type up the lists, and placement, so here they are.

I knew that when my FLGS applied for a Regional but did not get it I wanted to go to one close by and well it was ether Colorado or Arizona, convinced my wife by telling her we could go see the Grand Canyon so to Arizona it was. The Tournament was well run, even though the original TO got called into work, the tournament still ran very smoothly and was a great experience. The community down there was very welcoming to me and I felt like I was apart of it. Thrawn is really what won me the tournament having clutch Engineering and Concentrate Fire Commands is what led me to the larger MOVs in my games if I picked any other commander I know I still would have won my first two games, but not by nearly as large of margins Thrawn was clutch for me in every match up, even if in my game against @Daht the con fire he provided to demo to kill his demo whiffed even after re-rolls demo survived by 1 hull point, curse you Motti! But I had a great time, and played some very great and very tense games and great people as well.

Also as a side note the sticks from Regionals are pretty accurate just ever so slightly short it looks like they cut off right at the line instead of just above the line and that makes them ever so slightly short because according to the RR “The lines on the ruler that divide two adjacent bands always count as part of the band closest to the bottom of the ruler.” Ill still use them, but if I have a close call or am just out I'm going to break out the standard tool.

Curious about that BTA Kuat in first place. Only flipping two tokens seems a bit underwhelming against the kind of hard targets you normally want that thing to one-shot.

I've been thinking about that. How many times have you been going for the damage spike with your ISD-I and had an accuracy come up when you didn't need it. That's when I think that knocking out 2 defense tokens with Boarding Troopers is probably enough. One accuracy is pretty likely on the roll and takes care of the rest.

Not very often, since that accuracy is most likely a blue and is getting burned to reroll the blanks with Leading Shots. ;)

ECMs are rather popular on big targets around here, which puts a damper in that. Might start changing with EWS, though.

Here's the video from Round 3 of the Toronto Regional. This one has been trimmed to leave out the downtime between actions and dead air on the mic - it's the entire 2hr match in just over an hour, so it's easier to digest. Enjoy!
