What makes a ship overcosted?

By Wookiee_Slayer, in X-Wing

So I am really confused by what makes a ship overcosted...

If you have Xizor in his Starviper with PTL, SVmk2, Virago, Aututhrusters, Inertial Dampners, Advanced Sensors.... then thats 38 points... which is widely considered overpriced.

If you have Kylo in his Silencer with PTL, FOVanguard, Autothrusters, Primed Thrusters, Advanced Sensors... then thats 46 points, this however is not overpriced...

All you get for that 8 extra points is.... 1 shield and 2 PS extra, a T-roll (instead of a S-loop), about 6 more green moves and a tech slot (instead of an illicit)...

so can somebody tell me

1. what makes kylo more capable and ''worth it'' than ( FOR EXAMPLE ) Xizor or any other pilot.

2. what makes a ship/pilot overpriced in general...

Disclaimer: I used Kylo and Xizor in this example because they are both pilots that I own and have flown a lot over the last month or 2... as I said it is just a general example. ALSO I chose them because they are arc-dodgers for their respective faction.

Overcosting can come from a few different avanues,

Mainly, a ship coming in at a points cost that you can spend elsewhere for better results.

Generally, it means that you have to pour more points to get the same result as a cheaper option.

When putting a ship in a list, you have to expect that it can destroy, or help other parts of your list destroy just as many opposing points. So running a 45 point kylo that can get killed by a cheaper ship is a point sink

Well, Kylo is PS9 instead of PS7, the title and insane amounts of reposition, combined with permanent focus and Autothrusters makes him almost impossible to hit, and he's got a better dial. So he is definitely just better than Xizor.

In casual games where you aren't running into the insane aces lists, PTL/AS Kylo only gets shot if he wants to.

Even more so though, he can run and hide. That means nothing in casual, but in tournaments, if Kylo is up on points, he can make sure there's no shots for the rest of the game.

Xizor was certainly overcosted. I'm not sure he is now with SV Mk.II. The combination of 3 points reduced and the bank-barrel rolls really ramping up his maneuverability go a long way, but Starvipers where horrendously overpriced for so long I think that entered the consciousness of X-Wing players and it'll be hard to change that opinion. I know I certainly used to think they were way overpriced and useless.

Kylo has four advantages over an Advanced Sensors Xizor: [1] he gets to keep a focus token around with Advanced Optics. That card is sweet. [2] 9 > 7 [3] Absolute top speed. I know how nimble a Starviper is with PTL (haven't gotten into AdvS on one, but still. However, Kylo has 5-straight greens. Xizor or any other Starviper is wicked maneuverable in close range (their lateral distance potential is absurd), but the maximum forward distance they can clear is smaller. [4] Kylo is overpriced. A large part of why Kylo is strong is that he can kinda fortress his points and pull out a win on time.

Silencer/Starviper is a great pair of ships to compare. Exact same action bar, similar stat lines (1 fewer shield), both have access to a System slot.

I think you are undervaluing that things you listed in what you are getting for those 8 extra points, and btw you forgot the rerolls and get-out-of-jail card of the title, and the extra focus granted by Advanced Optics. Can't clear stress with a hard turn or 4+ speed straight makes Xizor way less maneuverable, even with the fancy barrel roll. That green 5 straight makes Kylo impossible to catch in the endgame where he is worth more points than most other ships. Also Advanced Optics >>> Inertial Dampeners. Also PS 7 means there are a lot of pilots that will be moving after him compared to Kylo at PS 9, including possibly Dash and Norra unless you invest even more points into a 3 pt bid. Going from 9 down to 7 is a big deal for a ship that wants to move last against a lot of good PS 8 ships including Miranda, Rey, Boba, Omega Leader, and the Inquisitor.
