Harpoon doing double damage?

By Stoneface, in X-Wing Rules Questions

This situation came up tonight and caused some head scratching.

A ship with the Harpooned condition is down to one health and takes an uncancelled crit. This triggers the condition card, each ship at R1 takes a damage, the crit destroyed the ship, the card is discarded and the ship takes a face down damage card. But the condition card says when the ship is destroyed, each ship at R1 takes damage.

Since the destruction of the ship with the condition card comes before the card is discarded, is double damage dealt to all ships at R1? One from the initial uncancelled crit and one from the ship being destroyed.

No. Harpooned! reads: "[uncancelled crit effect]. Then discard this card and receive 1 facedown damage card." The card is discarded at the same time as the facedown card is dealt, so the condition won't be around to see the ship be destroyed.

Except you discard the "Harpooned" condition card as soon as you deal the damage from the uncanceled crit. So it should go like this - deal the damage to ships at range one of the ship with the condition, deal a face down card to the ship with the condition, remove the condition, deal damage from the attack that had an uncanceled crit on the ship that had the condition, then remove the destroyed ship.

The consition says to discard it and -then- suffer 1 damage. The condition is already gone by the time the damage destroys you.

When you are hit and you have an uncanceled crit result, ships at Range 1 take damage then you discard the card. The " when you are destroyed... " clause won't come into effect because you've discarded the card.

If you take sufficient normal damage (no crits) to destroy the ship, then the " when you are destroyed... " clause would come into effect.

So it's not going to give everyone at Range 1 a double-whammy.

Wow. Triple  'd

Sorry for the confusion. The uncancelled crit, which triggers the Harpoon condition, is what destroys you not the face down damage card. The sequence goes like this. (I think)

1) Uncancelled crit

2) Triggers first part of condition. Ships at R1 suffer damage.

3) Destroys ship. Triggers "When destroyed..." Ships at R1 get another damage.

4) Face down dealt to . you.

5) Remove ship.

IF it works like this, Harpoons definitely need nerfed!

Harpooned requires the uncancelled crit at the compare results step, not the deal damage step. The moment when comparing dice that a crit is left uncancelled, you immediately trigger the condition before normal damage is dealt.

You're missing the "then discard this card..." bit.

From the FAQ:

Quote

Harpooned!
When an attack hits a ship (after "Compare Results," before "Deal Damage") with the Harpooned! condition and has 1 or more uncanceled [crit] results, the condition resolves at that time (see "Timing Chart for Performing an Attack" on page 8). Note that this occurs even if those [crit] results are subsequently canceled, as in the case of Twin Laser Turret, Ion Cannon, Jamming Beam, etc, but not if the [crit] results are altered or removed at an earlier step, such as by Heavy Laser Cannon's effect.

Gotcha!

Not missing it. Just putting it in the wrong sequence. :(

Also note that it doesn't matter if the facedown card dealt by Harpooned kills the ship, the condition is still discarded before you could start resolving the "on destruction" part of the effect.

I think that exists a way to a Harpooned condition can make two damages:

You need two ships with Harpooned at Range 1 and both whit 1 hull remaining .

Ship A - 1 Hull remaining -- R1 --Ship B- 1 Hull remaining

You shot at Ship A and make a critical that hits. Harpooned is triggered ("When you are hit by an attack") and "each other ship at Range 1 suffers 1 damage"

Ship B suffer his last damage and are destroyed, trigger: "When you are destroyed each ship at Range 1 suffers 1 damage."

Ship A suffer his last damage and are destroyed, trigger: "When you are destroyed each ship at Range 1 suffers 1 damage."

You finish the resolution of "When hit by an attack" and discard Harpooned and receive a damage card.

A bizarre situation difficult to find.

Is this posible?

ADD: the Harpooned condition on Ship A has make two damage all around.

No, once again, as soon as there is an uncanceled crit result during the compair results step of the attack on Ship A the harpoon condition triggers fully and is discarded before anything else happens so it is no longer there when the harpoon condition goes off on ship B and damages ship A.
