Crazy idea - Fight Nazis across the globe ?

By soulman, in Mansions of Madness

Mid 1930`` s settings of nazi strongholds, digs sites and other locations. stopping the Germans getting they hands on dark items ? But i would like to see more locations for MOM like farm houses, hospitals etc..... but everybody like a evil nazi !!

When Cthulhu is your Problem, Nazis won't be much of a Priority. Also the Arkham Horror IP is set in the 1920s, afaik, no Nazis there.

Perhaps the Achtung! Cthulhu games, where NS Germany allies with the Mythos in a lovecraftian "Weird War" setting, are more what you're looking for?

But I would like to see Farmhouses and other outdoor locations compatible with the Call of the Wild tiles…

they are getting a turn based pc game sometime this year. some rural usa would be nice, a little drive into the county side.....

Eldritch Horror is basically Indiana Jones with tentacles. When I played it last, we even had Indiana Jones music tracks in the background.

I really liked it, and so I understand the appeal, but it's not really the perfect fit for MoM I think...

Like, the problem is the 'monsters'. In what Lovecraft story was the protagonist fighting nazis, or even military? When you are playing say Circle of Eternity, when would it be fitting for a nazi officer to come in and attack the players?

Though I guess mobsters are already pushing the theme a bit, but even they, in the form of 'thugs' and 'criminals', are heavily present in The Horror at Red Hook.

Uhm, if it is a Lovecraft story, why would the protagonist fight nazis at all? H.P. was a big fan of fascism and national-socialist ideas and some SS-Ahnenerbe researcher could have easily been a protagonist.

There even is one story, The Temple , were an Imperial German u-boat commander, " Karl Heinrich, Graf von Altberg-Ehrenstein" is the main character. Lovecraft depicts him as a murderous **** (H.P. liked white supremacy and benevolent totalitarism, not Germans sinking English ships), but also admirably disciplined and strong-willed.

I was thinking more of would the nazis be trying to control the creatures and use the dark powers to win the war by any means, so replacing cultists with soldiers etc... , so heroes rushing to find and remove objects before they dig them up .

I would not say that HP was "big fan" of fascism and the Nazis at all. Check out this Lovecraft quote on Reddit:

And remember this was only in 1933 when the true horrors of the Nazis had started, and the horrors of bolshevism was just starting (but still ignored by leftist/communist sympathizers).

Lovecraft did not like Hitler and the German Nazi movement that much. But at his time, the choice seemed to be between communism, capitalism and fascism. Lovecrafts main concern with political systems was culture, rational progress and science. And he felt that communism (where an enraged mob of the uneducated poor mindlessly destroyed cultural treasures they could not comprehend) and capitalism (where a creative thinker like himself was forced to waste his time earning money to buy food and pay the rent) where detrimental to things like science, technology and literature.

So he had high hopes for fascist ideas: atheism, progress, rational distribution of resources, efficient hierarchies and organization, social darwinism, racial and cultural segregation, swift execution of plans, meritocracy etc. That is what he imagined when he describes the science fiction-y society of the Yithians in "The Shadow Out of Time":

Quote

[…] The political and economic system of each unit was a sort of fascistic socialism, with major resources rationally distributed, and power delegated to a small governing board elected by the votes of all able to pass certain educational and psychological tests. […]

And sonon. Nazi Germany was not really what H.P. envisioned: the militarism, the dumb language, the hatred and aggression, the spectacularly bad taste. But I guess he hoped that when crazyness was over, something better could emerge.

And yes, he never knew about a second world war or nazi atrocities.

But in a typical Lovecraft story, I don't see that just being a nazi would disqualify a character from being the good guy. Even if he were cruel or ridiculous, he'd still be the human and not a monstet or the cosmic horror…

That's a really interesting quote, I had never read it.

That the Nazis were the lesser of two evils was a really common sentiment at that time (and true too given hindsight). I mean, my country of Sweden was so-called 'neutral', but many thousands of Swedes volunteered to join the Germans and Finns in their fronts against the Russians, mainly due to oppose the communists. I think most people in the West felt that if you had to choose, Nazis were preferable. At least before they invaded France.

It was a complicated time, and cultural bonds between nations and cultures were different. For instance, my grandmom came as an orphaned refugee child from Finland, but she told me she fondly remembered when the Germans came to aid them against the Russians. As she said "They were so handsome and polite! And all of them were perfect gentlemen to us women and girls.", this while they all lived in dread of the Russians.

Of note here is that basically the entire officer cadre in Finland were educated in German military institutions, and spoke German. Things like that have a huge effect on how things are perceived too.

Anyway, I digress. A German Officer could work just as well as an Investigator as a monster to encounter. But I think, both given the author and the real world, it's probably better to avoid having enemies or heroes being explicitly political. It a bit like the other thread about gender diversity in board games. If it's really important for someone that their character is gay, all that is needed is to not explicitly say that they are straight. Leave it up to the player.

There is a time and place for everything, and that's called collage. Not MoM2ed. :P
