Tips Needed For Painting TIE Fighters

By strikenowhere, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

Hey guys,

Does anyone have any tips on painting TIE Fighters? I am a novice painter I just recently started painting my squadrons, having painted an x-wing squadron (and doing a passable job at it). I started by priming the TIEs with Chaos Black primer, then doing the body and lines on the wings with Celestra Grey. My lines on the wings, however, are a complete mess. I'm using an 18/0 liner brush, but the lines are totally uneven and bad-looking. Does anyone have suggestions on how to better tackle them?

Dras made a good tutorial:

Edit: it's for painting them from the beginning, but he does touch on the inner wings. From what I gather, it's basically just being careful and quick with the lines. Some people put tape, but I would imagine that to be rather fiddly.

Thanks Dragnista! Also, are you using a magnifying glass? And how do you manage to keep your hand steady enough to not make mistakes? Should I just be laying off the caffeine prior to painting?

I drink a bunch of caffeine ?

the trick is pose and posture.

elbows on the table. Wrists together. Hands in front of face.

I use a very lazy method for painting loads of TIEs. Prime white. Wash with black ink to both shade the recesses and turn the white to grey. Then paint the wing panels black (water down the black a bit). I usually then have to touch up the wing edges with light grey because I get some black on them. That's it!

I use more Time consulting method that @Drasnighta

First I use grey primer. Afther that I cover whole fighter with base paint (gray with small touch of blue). Afther that I wash it gently (watered down black glaze - forgive me I dont remember now name of the company). Then paint black panels on both sides makeing some triangels in interior part. Afther that finishal touches start. I add some highlights with Mix of White and base colour.

For me it is easier to paint large triangels than do one Sharp line.

When I leave hospital I will try to drop info about paints I use (also will add some pics) For sure greater part come from A10 thunderbolt paintset (below example of base color)

Thank you for this!

EDIT: Its a shame that many of the pictures in the post no longer load :(

@strikenowhere

I have no idea why Facebook expired the links... But they have been Replaced. I hope that helps :)

Yep they are showing up now - thanks again!

I just do a blue grey base (Mine are painted in A New Hope colours) and then paint the wing panels over the top.

I was lazy. Inside panels are just black. Outside I worked the grey lines. I'd recommend Dras' guides. Ultimately.
