Game of Thrones guys getting a Saga

By Archlyte, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand those guys are awesome. On the other hand I don't know if I want hard core adult Star Wars. I know I would grow to like it, but I think that it would certainly challenge a lot of what I have believed about the franchise. What timeframe would you like to see them focus on for their saga? Old Republic, Prequel Era, Galactic Civil War Era, something new?

The speculation is to wild to nail anything down except to acknowledge the writers and showrunners themselves. They are certainly great managers who know how to handle complex charaters and material and then present it in a very engaging manor. With that in mind i think that is a good step forward for disney. Also is this a more adult Star Wars theme that Disney is trying for?

No I wrote that very quickly out of excitement. I must not be too worried because I immediately wanted to bring the subject up here. I just wonder if they will get along with the Lucasfilm heads enough to stay, and I wonder if they will produce something I like. Benioff and Weiss met playing D&D in college, so I feel they belong to us :)

Didn't know that but that is awesome. I know I was like wtf when I saw it on the web. I feel the potential adult take on the star wars movies would be exciting to contemplate. You beat me to the punch by a few minutes lol:)

Well, they are working with somewhat extensive source material with Game of Thrones. So putting them in an 'adult' box seems a bit unfair. What we do know is that they are adept at looking at available source material and presenting it in a way that is digestible, with quality, and with an appropriate tone with regards to the source material. This doesn't at all mean they are only capable of producing 'adult' translations. and saying that GoT lore is somewhat extensive, still pales in comparison to everything that's out there for Star Wars (if you include Legends/EU). Sure, maybe Disney wants to have a more 'adult' setting for a series of films, but I wouldn't read that into this as am eventuality for their series at all.

I doubt they are prepared to go "adult" with star wars. Too much money to be made on Legos and action figures. GoT is a well done show with challenges of both story and technical production, and they are mining that talent that's all there is to it.

Though I won't complain if we ever do get that hard R Star Wars Adventure we secretly all want...

I won't complain about good R-rated star wars either, but to be honest. GoT was boring, pointless and simply way to … for a lack of a better word … american to be watchable. "LOOK, WE HAVE ****" somehow lacks any impact when saturday morning advertising has more of that. Having violence and sex in your series is fine, making it a distraction from the main plot … seems like a poor choice, a choice aimed specifically at an american cable tv audience.

Alas, GoT had been a global success, so maybe I am wrong with my assessment and sex just sells better globally than I think it does.

Either way, with Disney in control, I don't think the GoT crew can screw up a star wars show by trying to be edgy. And the production value should be solid enough to make it interesting ... at least if they actually get a solid budget. A lot of the marvel series suffer from having not enough budget. Budget might have been the biggest issue of inhumans and iron fist could have done certainly with more money for the fight scenes as well.

Ignoring the generalization that American cable TV viewers are all about wanting sex and violence in their media, did you read the novels? There are blatant, detailed descriptions of violence, sex, and sex with violence. The one fault I had with the novels was the author's apparent desire to print in extreme detail these scenes which seemed more fit for a dark romance snuff novel then a fantasy series. The producers of the cable TV series actually emulated the novels by including it.

Star Wars doesn't have that level of detail in its violence and the only dark sexual stuff might be that kiss between a brother and sister. :) So, I'm happy to hear GoT peeps are on board. I doubt they will be so out-of-touch with the franchise, or so worried about inserting boobs and gore for American viewers, that we will end up with Star Wars meets Barbarella.

I read the novels, they were to a certain point better than the show, but to be honest … they were declining in quality constanty. Martin went into them without a clear concept outside of ripping off the war of rose. And the sex scenes themselves are not really that prominent in the books either. A few important scenes, sure, but overall? Not even close to the peep show that GoT has become during the first two seasons.

Yeah that was just my first reaction and you make good points, but I do think it's the biggest part of their profile as artists. But hey, if they don't go with gratuitous sex and violence I would be happy :)

This is firmly in the "wait and see" category. I'm assuming they are not going to fill Star Wars with graphic sex, bloody violence, and the like. It's just a matter of seeing how good a story they can construct.

What if they are adapting Lords of the Expanse from WEG?

Interestingly enough, when kicking off a new campaign a few months ago, a Game of Thrones-esque take on Lords if the Expanse was one of the options that I gave the group.
