Fourth Faction: Star Wars Monsters

By Boba Rick, in X-Wing

Okay, I'm only half-serious about this idea.

Well, more like about 10% serious.

Here's some Star Wars space monsters that live in the vacuum of space. Some of them have to be on asteroids, taking swipes at things that come within range one I suppose.

Maybe for epic?

No, this is a terrible idea.

This is awesome! We need more forum content like this.

I 100% would play an alternate format where one player gets to play "hungry hungry hippo" with some Tie Fighters as an Exogorth.

Basically just integrate Loopin Chewie with the game more formally.

Also over under these fellas can survive in space?

Its only logical.

Just add the Vong and there you go.

It popped into my head when my kids were playing with my old Pirates Pocketmodel game:

This just made me want to quit X-Wing and win Pirates Worlds instead.

While an awesome idea, the Devs of this game can't even handle 3-faction balancing. 4 would absolutely be impossible, considering that they put like a max of 2 hours of work per week into this game and the rest into Destiny and Legion.

Can a Krayt or Rancor survive in space? Star Wars seriously has some cool monsters.

That’s an easy problem to fix. Clearly the monsters should be the most powerful. Lol

Dude, take your habitual negative cancericity somewhere else, like go play Destiny or Legion or something. X-Wing Devs do a great job and you're nothing more than a cotton-headed-ninny-muggings who no one takes seriously and loves to complain about a great game that is in a great spot.

Ha, I think the game is dead. It was fun but doesn't hold a candle to X-Wing.

I like the idea of NPCs in X-Wing.

You know, that could work. These could work as obstacles that if you go near them they take a swipe at you.

No.

And yet........

You're still here?

Wouldn’t the Yuuzhan Vong spearhead this faction?

Also, how about Gargantuan Space Rancors with Lasers!

I like the way you think @Boba Rick .

I've always wanted to see asteroids drift or move if a ship took a hit from one. It would/could really change how the game is played. (imagine bumping a rock to hit your opponent or trigger an action bomb!)

This made me very happy.

No! Just No!

My first thought as I read your original post was for some new obstacles that were creature themed. If the obstacles did something, however, they'd become way too prevalent, so they should be linked to some point cost.

Of the creatures you pictured, I think maybe the Mynocks are the most iconic. What if there were a "Mynock swarm" that functioned like a debris cloud. Then maybe there is a crew card or some other upgrade that allows you to use an action to move the obstacle.

Now that I think of that, I wonder why there's not just a crew card (like a force user) that allows you to move any obstacle as an action - I better start playing in tournaments so I can win it all and design that!

While an amusing idea - I mean, Star Fleet Battles has had 'space monsters' since the 1970s - you run into issues of playability with them. Notably, none of the Star Wars 'space monsters' have any kind of ranged weapon at all. (Something that the Star Trek 'space monsters' definitely did have - from the energy pulses of the Nomad probe to the Planet Killer's antiproton beam)

And gameplay where the only way to damage enemy fighters is to run into them ...I dunno, I mean, it'd be different , for sure...

Awesome! The space slug is my favorite scene in the movies! We've tried a few variants at my house that went over really well. One was "Space Slug Village" where each asteroid is assigned a number. Beginning of every turn roll a d6. Every ship in range 2 of that asteroid gets attacked by the slug! Roll 2 attack die and take hits and crits. On a double hit, assign the condition "Swallowed!" to that ship. The ship is suffers 2 damage and then is removed from the board. At the beginning of every turn, place a stress token on "Swallowed!" and roll an attack die. On a hit or crit, discard "Swallowed!" Deploy the ship anywhere in range 2 of the asteroid with the stress from "Swallowed!" attached to it. If "Swallowed!" has three stress tokens on it, destroy that ship.

The other is "3720 to 1." Double the asteroids. Beginning of each turn set a dial to a straight maneuver. Spin the dial on top of an asteroid until you get it to stop on top of it. The player who has initiative takes a 2 straight template and moves the asteroid, placing the template in the direction the maneuver arrow is pointing on the dial. Try to get it so the arrow is in middle of the template. The asteroid can be rotated in any position, as long any part of it touches the other end of the template. Normal collision rules apply. If the template goes through the ship, treat the ship like it went through an asteroid. Alternate until all asteroids have moved. If one goes off the edge, another appears the next turn within range 1 of the asteroid closest to the opposite edge. It's placed by whoever has iniative and it doesn't move that round. It's a little finicky but a **** of a lot of fun!
