FFG Star Wars Worlds

By Khyros, in Star Wars: Legion

So FFG recently announced Worlds, occurring in May 2018... Except Legion isn't included in this list. Now it's be fair to say that they won't host a worlds event as the first event, but they did this with X Wing back in 2012, and basically did it with L5R (Nationals at Gencon) with a prerelease.

So is this an indication that Legion won't be out on time as its supposed to be? Or do you think it won't be supported by OP? Or do you think they're just waiting to announce Legion's addition to worlds once it's released? Or something else?

I think that they’re waiting for us to have a handle on what the rules are so they can have a pool of TOs to draw from. Also, I imagine it would need its own days in terms of if it becomes popular, and knowing they will need to create large boards with terrain. Because asking folks to bring their own isn’t standard.

Personally, I don’t really care if it gets OP support or not. I have xwing for that fix.

They are very different games. With both X Wing and L5R, you can crack them open and play. You will need weeks and months to have a worlds that's worth looking at for Legion. The different between 0 painted figures and 50% of everyone's army being painted is huge in terms of photo opportunities and PR. Having a room full of bland minis might hurt the game more than help it.

Not to mention the difficulties inherent in telling two Rebel/Imperial armies apart during the game when unpainted, and reducing the likelihood of accidentally picking up an extra model since there is no distinguishing features.

Besides, the armies will not have that much variety at that point, unlike with a deck building game where two different decks from the initial release can look very different.

I agree with most of the sentiment going on here. This is FFG giving people time to paint their armies. Holding a World’s event for a tabletop game in which half the armies look shoddy is a bad move.

Id hope they have some sort of open play for Legion there though

Painted vs unpainted as a qualifier if there should be a worlds event for Legion is well ... extremely lame.

Runewars had a few unpainted armies rolling around at that world's event. I would fully expect even in 2019 there will be unpainted minies competing for Star Wars Legion Worlds. Fact of life, not everyone can paint.

This game will just be out about 6 weeks after AdeptiCon when 2018 worlds happens so yeah it might be premature still, I bet if there had been a Legion offering it would have drawn a crowd at worlds. There in lies I think the indicator FFG missed an opportunity.

I believe that the only indicator is that they won't have a world championship this year. Not really a big deal. Adepticon is going to have some events. They are even going to let people field unpainted armies there which is typically not allowed.

I expect to see the normal OP support and GenCon having the NA championship as normal.

I'm sure there will be some Legion side events at Worlds, but hosting a "World Championship" for a game that's six weeks old just seems silly, especially for a miniatures game that requires so much front-end prep work.

Rather than diluting Worlds further, I think it makes more sense to deal with the substantial logistics issues of hosting X-Wing and Destiny, which are huge, and giving a proper send-off to the Star Wars LCG (plus all the events for IA and Armada). Also, it's quite possible that FFG doesn't yet have enough appropriate scenery to even host a Worlds quality tournament.

Better to wait until next year when they have a mature pool of TOs, players with real army preparation and variety, more scenery, and one less overall game to deal with. Then they can have a tournament that legitimately feels like a "World Championship."

I'm willing to bet that there will be some legion events there, just not a world championship.

Even if they were going to have one, it'd be best to start with Store Champs and at least have a season before you culminate in a final :D

Well, they have the list of side events up and there is no Legion listed.

Is there any rules for RuneWars about how terrain is handled in a tournament setting?

Yes, but it doesn't work for Legion, as they have cards to say what affect the different bits of cardboard terrain has on the game. Also they have cardboard terrain.

Edit: Found the rules for Runewars "Each player must include four terrain cards of his or her choice and the corresponding punchboard terrain pieces—or custom 3D terrain—in their army."

Nice. I'm really looking forward to running my store championship this year. Portland Game Store FTW!

Yikes, so FFG has to figure out something since we're only provided a couple barrier walls. I just imagine a sea of tables with green felt and a sad bunch of misc trees placed about.

Any buildings for 28mm gaming should work. So the local architectural style just happens to resembles Europe in the 1900s, medieval era, or is primarily gothic ruins from years of fighting. Not to mention the various pueblo huts I've seen would fit right into Tatooine. We'll have a better idea of terrain once we get the rulebook though.

I may be completely dreaming but I'm hopeful we'll see thematic terrain 'kits' from FFG for Legion. It seems, especially for a game like this, terrain is very very very important and anything added to give it that cinematic feel will enhance the game.

I guess we could be left on our own and maybe yeah like runewars having to bring our own terrain but that'd kinda ... well, suck.

Which store in Portland? I am down here in Eugene and normally pretty limited local game support. I came up to Portland for some WotC SW mini Regionals

I run game nights on 1st and 3rd Fridays at the Portland Game Store on N. Killingsworth. I won't be running again until April, but you can definitely find some people for games on the FB group "Armada Admirals of Portland". Also we have a player who lives in Bend, so maybe you two could meet in the middle.

As long as FFG looks at what other companies do for terrain in major organized events, the tables at them should be interesting. They will just have to realize that the terrain is going to add a significant volume to their OP shipment.

Beyond the provided barriers, I just can't see them having people bring several terrain pieces to a major event.

The event tables that PP and Wryd have set up for tournament play at GenCon always have some good terrain on them. That's what they should be shooting for.

The logistics of it all will be a nightmare for FFG. Those tournaments at GenCon aren't only a way to do large scale events but it's also really good advertising for the game. I've watched and bought into games at GenCon based on watching the tournament boards there for mini games. If you do two days of prelims at 200 players a day, that's still 100 6x3 tables they would need and if you figure 4 simple pieces of terrain (at bare minimum) is 400 individual pieces of terrain. That's if you're talking simple trees or hills. If you do something more complicated the time and investment increases a lot.

I never said that it was going to be easy for them. And it's something they need to be working on now if they want a large event.
