Maul for the Rebels

By Hippie Moosen, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi everyone. I know a bunch of people have been posting different combinations to get Maulander on the table. Here's the one I'm digging at the moment.

Attack shuttle, Ezra 20, ptl 3, tlt 6, kyle katarn 3

ARC-170, Thane 26, tail gun 2, r2d2 4, vec thrust 2, alliance overhaul 0

B-wing, Keyan 29, vi 1, col det 0, b-wing e2 1, Maul 3

Total 100

Just looking for some feedback. Also what do you all think of swapping Thane's tail gunner for a tactician? As it stands now the squad basically assumes that Maulander will be the first target, so while keyan is getting shot, thane loads up on actions for his own attacks and ezra does his best to harass while loading up on tokens.

I feel like that's a really pricey Ezra. 32 points on a 4-HP ship with only 2 agility seems like a mistake to me. At very least, I'd switch to Rage/Inspiring Recruit. A focus token and full rerolls offensively, plus Ezra's pilot ability for defense, and it's only 28 points--saves 4. It still seems expensive for an attack shuttle to me, but I think it's better. I think generally I'd be more likely to swap to a Sheathipede Ezra. You get an extra HP and save 3 points before upgrades. Here, I'd toss on Tactician, R3-A2, and possibly Snap Shot or Wired. It'll come out to about 23 points.

I'd use that to upgrade Thane to Norra Wexley. Keep the Kyle Katarn from Ezra, keep the R2-D2, and add that Push the Limit. Norra should be punchier and tankier than Keyan.

I think in my version, there's a 2 points to spare, so let's toss a Tractor Beam on Keyan. It's not an every-game thing, but PS 9 is high enough that there are some ships which could get punished hard by being tractored onto a rock. At very least, it forces your opponent to play around the possibility. There's probably another version of the list where Keyan stays at PS 7, grabs Trick Shot and Ion Cannon, and combines this with Ezra for some nasty control, but I'm not sure.

Anyhow:

Ezra Bridger (23): Sheathipede-class Shuttle (17), Snap Shot (2), Tactician (2), R3-A2 (2)

Norra Wexley (41): ARC-170 (29), R2-D2 (4), Push the Limit (3), Kyle Katarn (3), Alliance Overhaul (0), Vectored Thrusters (2)

Keyan Farlander (35): B-Wing (29), Collision Detector (0), Tractor beam (1), Veteran Instincts (1), B-Wing/E2 (1), Maul (3)

If you really want to stick with TLT Ezra, I think I'd still go with Norra. Jan Ors would be nice crew. Early game, Keyan can Focus-to-Evade, to increase his longevity. If Ezra is a target, he can turn the Rage Focus into an Evade, and that's moderately tanky, and still he has full rerolls on both attacks. Later game, Norra can Evade and TL, probably just to reroll dice, but adding an eye result when attacking from the rear arc is also nice. Between the focus and R2-D2, your opponent will need to do at least 3 damage to her a turn to make progress. Hopefully, you'll have done enough damage to them so that isn't likely.

Keyan Farlander (34) B-Wing (29), Collision Detector (0), Veteran Instincts (1), B-Wing/E2 (1), Maul (3)

Ezra Bridger (28) Attack Shuttle (20), Twin Laser Turret (6), Inspiring Recruit (1), Rage (1)

Norra Wexley (38) ARC-170 (29), R2-D2 (4), Push the Limit (3), Jan Ors (2), Alliance Overhaul (0)

Thanks for the input, theBitterFig. I'm missing a fair # of your suggestions from my collection (don't have a U-wing or the rebel transport :P), but those both seem like pretty solid squads in theory. I'm probably going to try your second suggestion on my next game night with just some minor tweaks to your Ezra. probably gonna run him with Hera as crew, and wired to help get damage in, but I'll definitely give that Norra build a shot.

A friend of mine frequently flies Attack Shuttle Ezra with PtL, Jan Ors, Stealth Device and a turret. 3-5 green dice with 2 evade tokens and free focus mods on defense is annoyingly difficult to kill.

I use Stress-Bug Ezra with Wired or Snap Shot, Gunner and R3-A2. I’ll add Pulsed Ray Shield if I have the points. The control value for the points invested is hard to beat.

For ARC-170’s, I don’t have much use for Thane. Every time I tried to use him, my oponent just focused him down; usually in demoralizing PS-kill fashion. Norra, on the other hand, has delivered for me time after time. I prefer Butterfly Norra (PtL + BB-8 + Kyle Katarn + Engine Upgrade) over any of her R2-D2 builds. She’s really good with regen, but I have more fun with the increased mobility and action economy.

Farlander is one of my favorite pilots, and I’m really enjoying Maul in the back seat. I fly it with Crack Shot for that moment when I really need the attack to hit.

Ezra is the component that makes these maulander builds so interesting to me. There's a lot that this character can do between his 3 versions. Thanks to you guys I'm looking at buying a rebel transport just to try Ezra's stress bug build with r3-a2. Thanks again for the suggestions everyone.

In casual play, it's fine to proxy upgrades. :D

Rebel Transport is a surprisingly beautiful model, too. At least, that's how I found it. I mean, I figure it's just this grey blob, but it seems like it's a lot more up close.

I ll second swapping Kyle for Jan crew on the OP squad. Let me give you a few other ideas:

• Han Solo + Push the Limit + Ezra Bridger + Kanan Jarrus + Millennium Falcon (Evade Version) + Engine Upgrade

• Keyan Farlander + Sensor Jammer + Veteran Instincts + B-Wing/E2 + Maul

Just fly around things with Boost and evade and let Ezra do the focusing.

Also check this thread if you haven't already.

The transport is a cool model and has a bunch of cool cards plus Porkins and Hobbie. It’s worth the $.
