Opposite nym clarification

By XxChocodotxX, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello friends.

This morning I received a text from a friend of mine claiming that if one player is running Rebel Nym, and the other Scum Nym, then therefore, they can use each other’s abilities. I went to work seeing if this has ever come up before, but have found nothing. His reasoning being that because they’re the same pilot in the same ship, therefore they get each other’s abilities. Therefore it wouldn’t be the same with, say Fenn Rau. After challenging his position by telling him there was nothing to support it, he came back with “there’s nothing to oppose it either”. That is why I’m here now. So that there can be something somewhere to either oppose or support that position. Thanks.

He's wrong. In so many ways.

Rules Reference, page 8, 2nd bullet under card abilities:

”The word ‘you’ on a ship card refers to the corresponding ship. Abilities on ship cards cannot affect other ships unless the ability specifies otherwise.”

Each Nym ship on the table has a corresponding pilot card. The ship can only resolve abilities belonging to the corresponding card.

Not to mention 'ain't no rule says you can't' just doesn't apply in x wing. Or any game or sport regardless of bad sport movies.

There's no rule that says I can't throw a piece of fried chicken at people I play against any time they activate a ship either.

I have been a TO for a long time and have had people bring some interesting arguments about rules with the basis of the argument being "the rules don't say....." etc, BUT this has to be the most crazy one yet. LOL

First, they are not the "same" pilot. One is rebel, one is scum. Just like Bobba, but with Empire and Scum. There are pilots that are in different ships, they do not share actions or abilities either. I would believe most people would accept this just a general rule in gaming... not just x-wing.

Not sure if you guys are trying to win by opponent forfeit, or you are just hungry.

Grab a Snickers.

Well, there's no rule in Casual play. In Organized Play, you have to politely hand the fried chicken to your opponent or else you can be removed for Unsporting Conduct.

So if you use an HLC to throw some KFC, do you still have to change your crits to hits? I do not see a fried chicken clarification ruling in the FAQ. I believe we will need to write one in because it might be easy to rule on now, but when you start tossing the mashed potatoes and green beans, we might break the game.

Anytime someone goes to "there's no rule AGAINST it" I just go "Thanks for conceding the argument" because that is just the go to response for someone who has no actual justification. Even if a few explicit "can'ts" are part of them, rules tell you what you CAN do, they are never meant to exhaustively list everything you can't do, because that's impossible.

There's no rule that says I'm not allowed to remove one of your ships from the board every time I rip a fart either, but I bet your friend wouldn't accept that as a valid argument against him if I ate a bunch of Mexican before a game and then instantly removed all his ships in round one.

This is the principle of how exception based rules systems work:

The rules tell you what you CAN do. You cannot do anything else.

Except, the cards provide exceptions to those rules, ways that you can break them.

You cannot do anything which isn't written in the rules, on a card, or in the FAQ.

Or on the menu.

I'm a bit worried about you if you do things that are on the menu :P

I want to see a game between @Slugrage and @sharrrp . With all the farting and fried chicken being thrown, it'd be a hoot! :D

I'm not Mexican, but I would strongly recomend against eating people before any game, regardles of their nationality... Specialy if they give you gases.

I agree with the above, and think that that's outrageous, and would like to the game between slugrage and sharrp. but can I use the chicken HLC on the Outrider? or does that need to be nerfed?

So we need to nerf mashed potatoes and green beans because they are so op ;)
