General Draven

By Undeadguy, in Star Wars: Armada

Draven is becoming one of my favorite officers, right beside Bail. For 3 points, I replace Leia who is always on a Comms Net. And then combine Draven with Toryn, and you have a cheap anti-squad platform with a large threat range. This is what I used today with amazing effect against Dengar:

GR-75 Combat Retrofits (24)
• General Draven (3)
• Comms Net (2)
= 29 Points

GR-75 Medium Transports (18)
• Toryn Farr (7)
• Bright Hope (2)
= 27 Points

Has anyone else used him yet? I think he can be used to finally fit Flechette into Rebel fleets like this:

Hammerhead Torpedo Corvette (36)
• General Draven (3)
• Ruthless Strategists (4)
• Flechette Torpedoes (3)
= 46 Points

or

Pelta Assault Ship (56)
• General Draven (3)
• Flechette Torpedoes (3)
= 62 Points

Now you can FT at medium 25% of the time.

1 black dice for FT is a little too risky. I'd rather have 2. At this point, ER sounds like better than FT.

Yea I'm really disappointed ER overtook the FT hype. That's why I hope Draven can bring it back, but it's very unlikely. If you run into no squads, ER is obviously better and it also has the chance to burst to kill a squad. It really needs Ordnance Pods to work, but the size and Ordnance slot restriction make it absurd to actually use.

MC75 Armored Cruiser might like Draven and FTs, just to play a kind of "anti-everything" role.

Except when you don't run into enough squads to justify 9 points, an officer and both ordnance slots. Or you run into an ISD who does happen to have squads, but you don't have the right upgrades to get damage onto the ISD.

There is no doubt a ship like this would be effective against squads, but it's like taking Demo and making it anti-squad. Just meh results unless you know you'll be facing down Rieekan Aces and Sloane every game.

MC75 Ordnance Cruiser (100)
• General Draven (3)
• Ordnance Experts (4)
• Quad Laser Turrets (5)
• Flechette Torpedoes (3)
• Ordnance Pods (3)
= 118 Points

I prefer my anti-squad ships to be cheap so I feel alright when they don't get to do anything. The HH is a bit pricey, and the Pelta is too much for my taste.

Armored Cruiser, not Ordnance (good battleship, but meh flak on that one.) Draven and FTs is 6 points, and you can still give it QBTS, OES,and ECMs for 126 points. It's really something you'd do when you were already going to fly a 75. 6 points for some insurance seems like a good deal to me, but I get it wouldn't be everybody's thing. :)

FT is really hard to use. That's why even through all the screaming, it wasn't used very often vs Rieekan in the heyday. I know JJ tried it, but ended that particular tournament somewhere in the middle.

Its hard to get to go off correctly, its hard to get black flak to actually land, and its absolutely worthless vs anything that isn't max fighters (you either ignore them or kill them outright.) ER does double duty all the time.

Didnt he also not play against Rieekan? Which is the real issue with Flechettes. They are awesome if people plan to squad you to death, but are a severe detriment if they dont. Because not only did you pay the points for them (whatever) but the platform you brought to use them could have been solid antiship without them. (Doesnt matter what ordinance platform im talking about here)

Yep, that's also exactly it. Its not the 3 pt cost of FT. Its the opportunity cost of not doing more influential damage with APT or ER. For what it's supposed to do.. it does it well. But when the opponent has squads you don't need to fight (even a light screen of 6 Awings is going to do around 4 avg dmg a turn, that's... kind of weak) they become near useless (they also don't kill them faster to score points like ER). This is one thing people simply refused to accept in the Rieekan meta.
