Actually, it might just offset the guns on a pod to make room for more systems.

What comes to mind for a unique roll is a scout or harassment fighter.

normal TIE cockpits are transparent. they probably just are using low-contrast red lighting to light the cockpits, like real world military pilots do in night or low light conditions. enough light to see the controls, but at low enough levels and in wavelengths which do not destroy natural nightvision.

It really looks stupid ... I guess we don't see it in Ep 4 b/c the design is so awful the empire scrapped it. To bad its in this movie though.

Makes sense. Wouldn't be the first time bad guys in a Harrison Ford movie had sidecars:

(And yeah, I know Ford is probably not actually in the movie, but Han is a Harrison Ford character, so I'm counting it.)

Anyway, my guess for this guy in the new trailer is that it's a TIE/gt - looks pretty cool, actually, and can't wait to get a predecessor to the TIE Bomber on the table! Hopefully it brings us some upgrades that help out the suffering generic TIE pilots...

i think it'll be a electronic warfare/sensor vehicle. something like an EA-6B prowler. used in the scene to offset the lack of sensory ability the cloud imparts on the ISD.

This is my guess. We see Han signing up for flight training then we see a ship with a what looks like a sidecar. There's probably an instructor in there. Even if it is just a trainer, I still want at least one for my XWM collection.
