Harpoon defense.

By Browncoat50, in X-Wing

So I recently made the decision to compete soley imperial. In doing so I finally picked up a copy of the tie advanced. It came with expert handling. I keep seeing tall about countermeasures and black one, but why is there no love for this EPT? It seems like kylo and Vader can use it well, plus any ship that can equip vectord thrusters. Why doesmt this see play?

I'd guess opportunity cost. The EPT slot is valuable, and Expert Handling needs to prove to be more useful than the likes of Veteran Instincts, Push The Limit, or even some of the free EPTs.

It seems that most people prefer PS11 Vader, the version which you will have issues to get targets lock on and which can alpha strike stuff with harpoons instead of PS9 Vader who can remove one target lock from himself on a barrel roll, but not a boost action.

Meanwhile black one is not only cheaper, but as well does not take an EPT and works on the natural boost AND works on your allies as well.

Also everyone is going nuts with PS 11. If you put Expert handling on Vader he’s locked at PS 9. A PS 11 QD, Vader, or Talonbane Cobra will still target lock you.

And (while not as popular) you can team it up with BB-8 and strip multiple target locks a turn.

Alright, thanks everyone. That all makes too much sense

My defense against Harpoons is House Rule 1: No Harpoons

Works against Nu and Rho boats though, which are also popular Harpoon platforms in current lists.

It doesn't work against a Deadeye Rhoboat. These are the ones people, including myself, are favoring in the current meta.

Yeah, Deadeye Rho's won't be deterred by it. Miranda is at PS 8. I mean, it's not fool-foolproof but it does have some impact. It's also not locked to a specific ship type like Black One and is reusable unlike Countermeasures (sans Scavenger crane funkyness), cheaper than Countermeasures, but the stress cost is something if not on a ship with BR.

Plus we cannot forget about non-Harpoon threats, like Fenn/Ghost lists who would be unperturbed by Expert Handling.

yeah im with ya. harpoons are broken, and no one needs to waste their time playing against them

I favor expert handling, but it is high PS luxury, if you really want to take advantage of it. I wish it would do for my Karthak Pirates, but nope, it just lost two points a ship.

Yep. This.

VI is more important.

And Black One is even just one point. For use on your allies too.

Countermeasures is great for making one turn ridiculous.

The first rule of X-Wing is there is no X-Wing.

No Harpoons is Rule #2.

My defense against Harpoons is the Gecko Rush.

They ain't pooning you if they've bumped and/or are at range one.

My defense against Harpoons: They have an arc, don't be in it.

Or if you are, be in it at range 1 and accept the 3 dice primary.

There is exactly one home for Expert Handling - and that's on a Kylo Ren shuttle. It's truly hilarious what that ship can do, especially with Advanced Sensors equipped, to let you dodge arcs with the Space Bat. If you're looking for a laugh, I'd recommend it.

I have yet to fly them, but boy oh boy are they the hotness!! ....and the only thing keeping Fenn/Kanan from running all over every star-field mat I can see.
