Live casting vassal games

By brettpkelly, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

I've enjoyed watching every episode I get to watch. Sadly can't watch them all, but would like to know if there's a way for you to maybe put something in the title's of the streams that indicates it's a really good one to watch? I've been looking at number of views and picking the ones with the most views currently, but just trying to make the best choices I can since I can't watch every one. But I've definitely gotten plenty of good points and good strategic thoughts in each video I've gotten to watch! So I can't say I've seen a bad one yet.

As much as I love podcasts for when I'm driving or passively able to listen, and normal youtube videos have some value too, these commentated games with the ability to follow everything in vassal are just so much more helpful to seeing strategies play out. Thanks for doing these Brett!

Is it sexist to force Drokkatta into the ‘Other’ category? Asking for a friend...

I'm also pretty interested in getting Drokkkatta to work, maybe we can come up with a Drokkatta list to play too.

I really liked this list. I've considered running jLuke instead of Rangers and they are recently on my naughty list. Can't seem to get enough benefit from them if they aren't focused. And with trooper swarms and Vader being a thing, I tend to focus Drok for a massive attack (1 shotting eJets and eRiots consistently).

  • Alliance Ranger [Elite] [12]
  • Han Solo [12]
  • Rogue Smuggler [-2]
  • Drokkatta [9]
  • Gideon Argus [3]
  • Alliance Smuggler [2]
  • Alliance Smuggler [2]
  • C-3P0 [2]

@ryanjamal Ran a fun list too, Drok, eQuay, BT w/Explosive Armaments, eJawa, Temp, RCP, rJawa....something like that. He worked me over with it!

I'll try to make a list of my top picks, so far I've just been labeling by lists so you can check out a particular archetype you're interested in learning

I'll bring one of my regionals list on the stream sometime soon (Han/Drokkatta)

What time of day do you usually record them?

So far I start around 5 or 6 on Fridays and noon on Saturdays and Sundays, but it's pretty sporadic. It would be too much of a time commitment to have a more regular schedule unfortunately.

Also sometimes I can't find a game, so my schedule is a bit dependent on that as well.

That list trashed me. I'd never gone up against a rebel box before, and had a lot of trouble figuring out what to shoot. Definitely smashed up against On the Lam at a bad moment, too.

Also, just watching the game against @ryanjamal , and you mentioned "Invasive Procedure" on nobody just to become focused -- I sort of buy that, but what's the rules plumbing for this? It seems similar to the On the Limit ruling with Onar: you can start the action and then fulfill as many consequences as possible; just not those for adjacent figures. Is it something like that?

That's exactly right, if there are any adjacent figures you must fulfill that part of the ability, otherwise you do as much as you can

I like Drokkatta a lot but I think there are no figures in rebels with synergy with her.

However, I think BT1 can be quite good. Scum list with Drokkata, BT1, eSentrys with explosive armament? A lot of blast damage there.

I brought Drok into Scum to pair with BT for the KS Regional, and it worked moderately well. I think the eSentries could work well there as well, but then you're split between Heavy Weapons, Droid, and Hunter cards.

My current list is with Han and Drok, and I think it works pretty well (one version of it can be seen on Brett's stream). Honestly, Drok doesn't need much synergy. I'd always bring in Hera to help with range and surges, but Drok is fine to through into any list and she's just gonna do work :-). I always bring in Collateral Damage with her, and sometimes I have a useless card, but the payoff is so high with her.

Far and away my favorite figure right now.

Thanks again for streaming these Brett.

I'm looking over my game (Ben Jules) vs Turin -- spy vs spy lists, which we didn't plan. I think I made a few mistakes -- failing to comm disrupt that first intel leak was one, but the one that feels more interesting is right around 42:20, after the Imperial Officer's activation. I activated R2 for Scomp-Link and an attack roll on the wounded EJet. The next activation, his focused Heavy came up and did a big blast attack against my hidden ranger. I was relying a TON on that hide to cancel the attack, and wasn't really thinking of his possible command deck (Lock On or Deadeye would've recovered his range, and Collateral Damage + Blast 2 would -- and did -- kill Mak).

What I should have done was keep to the strategy of playing away from the Heavies (there's a chess technique called "Zugzwang", which is where you make a move that leaves your opponent no good option for their move, and it totally applies in IA, especially rebel skirmish), and activated Mak first to go snipe the wounded EJet, looking for a critical hit pierce kill with the card discard mechanic. I think I was wanting to play slowly for more information, on the general theory that I had a stall turn that I could use to scomp, but even there, Mak's hand discard bonus would have been better. If I'd rolled a white, I could still have followed up by focusing R2 with 3p0 or going for the kill with Gideon (although he was soft-committed to pulling the ESab in for 2 points with tactical maneuver).

Yeah, I’ve rewatched my two games Brett’s streamed, and they’re super helpful. I see where I’ve positioned wrong, hear how Brett would break apart my list, notice that I thought Chopper only had three movement for most of those games (lol, I had the wrong astromech’s stats in my head).

Also, uh, I play too slowly. So sorry to Brett and everyone watching ?

Part of that is just that you tend to run glass cannon figures so one little mistake and you lose a fig and possibly gamd. Like last game you probably overstretched Han without on the lam and it killed him. So the more you have riding on it the more you think through. Not to mention the last game Bretts last basically auto pilots for most moves 1st round so yeah...dont be too harsh on yourself ;p

I'd love to have open knowledge of the player's hands. Why don't you take a record file from the match after it's finished? You can go through every step in your own speed and see the command cards. Also you could ask the players if the match is even worth streaming.

Probably going to stream some games tonight around 6. If there's interest I'll be playing my old Shyla list against new meta lists.

My first game on Vassal the only thing that went well was using Shyla to whip Vader into the Rancor pit. I was way behind and I resigned right after; I just wanted to do it!

Quick question. If Shyla whips someone into the pit, does she still get the attack on that figure?

No. But still awesome :-)

Thanks. A Vader out of the way is worth the loss of the attack.

I casted some games from about 6:15 to 8:00 last night. They're both available on twitch.tv/brettpkelly under past videos. I haven't had a chance to upload them to youtube yet.

What time zone are you in Brett?
