Flying jank, or bringing a wooden knife to a laser gun fight

I use it religiously. A scimitar with Vader and Quickdraw fully kitted out can put in a ton of work.

All it needs is the ability to take the 2 crew and 1 ordinance upgrade at the same time and it would be perfect. Basically the title with the option to keep 1 torp or 1 missile or 1 bomb slot.

Yeah agreed. Sadly, lore wise, I don't think it was supposed to.

I feel ya. I love flying jank, but you have to confirm before the match what the plan is and if both players agree.

But even then, sometimes the jank is actually good. May get both ways, so you're list might perform better than you think or the other guys "casual list" might be more competitive than expected.

Yeah. Just make a gentleman's agreement before hand.

I tend to say though, if its Jank Casual, anything is free game except for known T1 lists. And only small variants on a T1 list, like swapping 1 pilot out of 3, is probably not very jank. But largely, anything else is fair game: Cuz other than that, its really hard to decide what's seriously competitive and what's not.

My jank lists are really jank, they don't really stand a chance vs T1. But they're not BAD lists. They're really darn good actually, and will bite your face off if you don't take it seriously. My Upsilon, QD, Rhymer list will utterly destroy an opponent in 20 minutes.

My take away is to try to discuss what list I’m bringing and see what my opponent wants to fly and try to get some understanding about what we want to get out of the game. I think a simple “I’m flying some silly jank, looking for a casual match”... “oh I’m flying NymMiranda looking for a competitive match” would have saved me and my second opponent a bunch of time.

This approach would work just as well at the game store or on Vassal/ TTS.

Yeah...I haven't delved deep into playing random folks on Vassal. If I just flat out don't want to play against something someone is running, I'll just tell them and wish them luck in their next game. If that means they're mad at me about it...I guess that's okay?
