A PSA to dice roller ocd's

By Ralgon, in Star Wars: Legion

Now we have more rules and new units out thought i'd mention that *if* you can't handle or really dislike rerolling part of your dice pools (before mods), you need a minimum of 4 dice packs from one source or another.

atrt flamethrower needs 12 black dice maximum (more if we see larger units in the future)

fleet troopers use 8-10 white minimum (more if the mpl-57 uses a white)

Snowtrooper with a flamethrower have the potential to be dice hogs too (spray keyword)

and ofc we need matching defense die of both colors to counter the best of their output (however unlikely that is)

From the core contents on the spanish site and the details on the dice packs we know we only get 3 of each per purchase.

Thank you.

So thats the core plus 3 dice packs right?

Yes. Was allowing for those crazy mofo's that may download the rules and play off expansions/old mini's.... or like me order multiple cores

The dice packs are insanely overpriced, even compared to miniature wargaming in general those dice packs are horrible. Three packs is $45 for something that should cost maybe $10...This is bad and I hope FFG catches some flak about it.

Ill hold off on the dice packs i think, someone will inevitably release third party packs much cheaper.

Industry standard average msrp at your local gaming store is about $11 for a set of 7 common RPG dice. Legion dice are custom (more money) and come in packs of 15 (more than double). Yet only cost $4-5 more (bargain). And nobody neeeeeds 4 sets of dice. Thats a best... worst?.... lol.... case scenario. 1 pack plus the core is fine, unless you are, as the thread states, OCD about max die rolls. Which I understand exists lol

But 3 packs for something that would cost... $70 if it were average polyhedral gaming dice, thats a good deal. Anyone barking that literally 45 custom gaming dice should cost $10 is absolutely off course. Lets stop the myth that gaming companies are wayyyyy insanely overpriced. And stop screaming for 3rd party support. You want your game to do well? Then cough up the $15 you need for an average game, and give it to the company that makes that game.

Dice app anyone?

I’ll just batch roll. It’s worked fine in games for 30 years, I’m sure it’ll work fine for this.

If it gets too annoying i may get more dice packs. As it stands if you and your opponent each have core and dice pack that's the 4 sets required for max rolls.

My locals stores sell the typica polyhedrall RPG dice sets for about $5, that would make 21 dice for $15 and these of more then the two variations Legions dice come in. Not to mention these "custom" dice have several that are mostly blank.

Compared to what im gonna be spending on this game, the cost for dice is minimal but this its an atrocious way to have us pay, highly, for something that really should already be included.

At the end of the day i'm pretty sure most of us will easily get away with 2, but as i noted above ( and i'm not one of these people btw) some people really have an aversion to tracking multiple rolls for a pool.

Not to mention it can get really messy for figuring out rerolls.

I have been batch rolling for years I do not see the need for 4 packs for dice. The core plus one pack is what I am starting with. If I find them on sale in the future or they are given out in tournaments I will collect them that way. I see no reason to purchase more initially. In the past for keeping track of re-rolls we have used D6 die to keep track.

Meh I’ll just wait for the sparkly dice they give out as prizes at regional tourneys and above then pay hundreds of dollars for those.

Great! Now if I decide later on that an additional core is the most cost effective way to pick up the units I want I won't feel like I wasted money on my dice pack.

Tokens of some kind to represent dice results can help, or at least pen and paper. We still don't know exactly how shooting resolves as far as weapon groups and dice pools, so, maybe we will have a better idea when the rules are released?

Depends on the faction you're running and how patient you are.

If you can wait for grappling hooks , impact grenades, and comms jammers till future expansions there's really no reason not to as a rebel (you still don't even have a full 800 point force!!!).

Imps need to wait and see what that last card in the speeder bike expansion is, but if it's not unit defining they are in the same boat except they can build a full army out of the boxes.

Hoping dice are early prizes. That would be classy.

I preordered one core set plus one dice pack. If I need to roll more than that, I’ll batch it out.

Typically, dice are given out by FFG for people who place high enough at regionals, nationals, and worlds. Cannot recall offhand if they do them at the more recent System Open / Galactic Qualifier type events.

Historically how/when/where do they announce competitions? Ie how would we go about finding and doing these?

I can see myself getting the core set +1 dice pack, then another dice pack later on when my army gets bigger. I'm sure there will be plenty of downtime between releases where there is nothing to buy in which 10-15 bucks on an extra dice pack isn't a big deal...if the release schedule of this game is anything like armada....I think i'll have a couple off months to buy some friggin dice.

100% my thoughts on this

They’ll post something on the FFG site and on Twitter.

I have it...since it's called "Star Wars Dice" I'm gonna bet that Legion dice get added to it....

I will use the dice app.
