What would you guys suggest for a new player in terms of simple but effective? Ie maybe not too complex on the rules but still capable of winning? I think two big ships but those usually come with complex uprgrade loadouts, but depending which ones you have that might be trickier for a new player to run without getting tripped up a bit. Conversely a higher number of less tricked out ships might be tricky to maneuver. What do you guys think? I am open to all feedback here.
Advice for a newcomer fleet?
It would be helpful to know what you own, as well as which faction you would prefer. And if you are unsure, perhaps some insight in how you tend to approach strategy war games. Do you prefer to tank or are you Leeroy Jenkins? Do you enjoy complex movements and range control, or do you prefer just to throw as many dice as you can?
One of the amazing things, IMO, about Armada is that there are a large number of build archetypes that do well. The most important thing is probably trying to find something that fits your play style.
All of that said, it was my personal experience that Imperial ships were easier for me to learn with than Rebel ships. But as I've played more, I've discovered that Rebel fleets fit my play style better.
If you can provide more of that context, it will be easier to offer suggestions on a fleet to learn with.
I'm not the new one it's for my brother. We have access to basically everything at least twice in most cases.
To clarify, I know there are lots of good approaches, that's why I posted, in case there was a pretty solid simple but effective approach I hadn't thought of. BT Avenger is as pull trigger/kill target as it gets but maybe I am missing something or underestimating the complexity of building the rest of your fleet around it.
Here's a BTA variant that I've tried a couple of times and it seems to work pretty well:
Moff Jerjerrod Kuat Refit [391/400]
Assault: Advanced Gunnery
Defense: Hyperspace Assault
Navigation: Dangerous Territory
ISD Kuat Refit [Flagship] (114)
* Moff Jerjerrod (23)
* Strategic Adviser (4)
* Boarding Troopers (3)
* Electronic Countermeasures (7)
* Leading Shots (4)
* External Racks (3)
* Avenger (5)
Ship Total = 161
Gladiator I (56)
* Skilled First Officer (1)
* Ordnance Experts (4)
* Assault Proton Torpedoes (5)
* Demolisher (10)
Ship Total = 76
Raider I (44)
* Ordnance Experts (4)
* External Racks (3)
Ship Total = 51
Gozanti Cruisers (23)
* Comms Net (2)
Ship Total = 25
Squadrons
* Ciena Ree (17)
* Valen Rudor (13)
* Morna Kee (27)
* IG-88 (21)
Squadrons Total = 78
Other variations:
- Use Motti instead of Jerjerrod. More hull, but less maneuverable.
- Use an ISD-1 instead of the Kuat refit. Better Boarding Troopers, but you lose the ordnance slot.
- Add Slicer Tools to the Gozanti. Gives the flotilla something else to do besides passing tokens and activating Ciena+Valen.
- Add Hondo to the Gozanti. Pretty much guarantees you can get Boarding Troopers to fire.
