X-Wing Jedi Academy: Poe, Wedge, & Jake vs Assaj & Ketsu

By Boom Owl, in X-Wing

X-Wing Jedi Academy:

  • I thought it would be interesting to post a specific semi random matchup and discuss some game decisions in detail.
  • If the discussion is productive maybe we can do a series of these matchup breakdowns as a community on a regular basis.
  • Yes BB8 Poe is sub-optimal Poe and yes Jake Farrell should probably be Fenn Rau and yes Wedge should probably be PS11.
  • Let all of that go for a moment and consider the questions below with the given lists and presented board state.
  • Here are the two lists I selected for the first session of X-Wing Jedi Academy.

Rebel Aces vs Assaj/Ketsu

Topic #1: Place Forces

  • For simplicty...lets assume the rocks are put in a generic fashion in 2/2 corners.
  • Ship placement here depends in large part on what the Assaj/Ketsu player decides to do.
  • Lets say he sets up in the top left corner like this.
  • How would you set up Poe, Wedge, and Jake in reply given the board state?
  • Describe it or screenshot the image below and highlight where you would place the 3 rebel ships.

Topic #2: Round 1 Identify the Danger Zone & Choose Your Speed & Direction

  • Ok lets say the Rebel player doesn't give the ship placement to much thought same as the rock placement
  • The Rebel just generically puts 1 ship in each corner and Wedge in the middle.
  • What would be the preferred location for the first round of combat for the Scum vs Rebel Player?
  • Take a screenshot and circle in Red where the Rebel player "wants" the Scum player to go and vice versa.
  • Given the board state what Speed & Direction would you consider for the Rebel Ships for Round 1 of movement?

Topic #3: Round 2 Re-Identify the Danger Zone, Commit, and Setup Round 3

  • Assume that the Rebel Player wanted to gather more info.
  • They 1 Forward with Poe and focus for advanced optics. 1 Forward with Wedge and FAA BR Left.
  • Jake Three Hard Turns Left Boosts and BR Left to get some distances from that line of rocks
  • What options does the Scum player have here?
  • What options does the Rebel player have here?
  • How can either player setup an advantage for the 3rd Round of Movement?
  • Remember Jake has Proton Rockets

Topic #4: Enter the Danger Zone

  • Alright so Ketsu and Assaj do a 5 forward keeping their mobile Arcs to the side. Assaj Evades, Ketsu takes a Focus.
  • Jake does a 5 forward green boosts for a focus and range 1 on Assaj and pushes for the evade
  • Poe does a 2 Bank Right and Target Locks Assaj
  • Wedge Does a 1 Forward and takes a Target Lock
  • Does Assaj pop Countermeasures and Glitterstim here?
  • Assume Assaj strips the stress from Jake and Jake survives.
  • What options does the Scum player have here?
  • What options does the Rebel player have here?
  • How can either player setup an advantage for the 4th Round of Movement?

Topic #5: Who "Won" the First 3 Rounds Here?

  • Lets pretend the game ended here.
  • Who has the advantage?
  • Was a critical mistake already made this early in the game?
  • How much of the first 3 rounds was actually dictated by the simple rock placement?

Thats it for now, Happy Friday!

Thank you for doing this, it is practical and helpful.

As the Rebel player I would say, "I have a bad feeling about this."

1) Setup far right corner.

2) I don't know. I would never setup that way.

3) I don't know.

4) Asajj does pop Stims but only because Jake has Prockets. Save countermeasures, she is guaranteed to stop 2 damage from Jake without even rolling dice. The other shots are going to be range three anyways. In the next round Asajj looks to be drawing a lot of fire so save the full-blown timewalk for then.

5) Scum has the advantage because the Rebel list is inferior and because they setup bad.
