By Baltanok, in Star Wars: Armada

Fortunately, this is a game and not a historic simulation.

Armada needs to have what works from a game standpoint first - with "realism" a distant second, if at all.

I would disagree there. This game is a tabletop representation of space boats flying around in a universe where space wizards with laser swords can cut through anything and you can hear stuff in the dead vacuum of space. First and foremost it has to be true to its source material. And the source material has brazen fighter and bomber pilots blowing up things many times their size every day.

This didn’t start as a competitive game that they slapped Star Wars onto. It started as a Star Wars game that they’re trying to balance for competition. They’ll make missteps from time to time, but they do correct them. Just look at Wave 7 as a response to the susceptibility of large ships to dying horrible, unsatisfying deaths.

Yep this.

Although Japan had a very good Air Force at the start of WW2. In upper doctrine, they down-played the importance of air and carriers to their demise.

They also notably lacked appreciable AA on their ships up until the end of the war, which was too late. Whereas American ships were bristling with AA mounts.

* double checks if on axisalllies.orgs' or Armada Forums * ?

While I agree somewhat WW2 was when air power was just leaving its infancy and finding its place in the armed forces. Not every country was sold on its dominance because it didn’t play a huge part in WW1 other than recon. If you look at the AAA at the time for ships it was very minimal and by the time it was apparent that air power would reign supreme the Japanese were starved for resources to be able to adapt to the changes.

Which is why they lost!?

It also helped that all of Europe/Asia had been beating the **** out of each other for 3+ years before America got involved- it’s much easier to stomp on an enemy when they are already strapped for resources and you come in fresh guns a blazin’
