Rebels artist aught to be ashamed

By Formynder4, in Star Wars: Armada

I avoided the clickbait title "Rebels Ruining Armada", but only barely.

Now that I have the Chimaera in hand and can look at it more closely, that is clearly a hydra painted on it and not a chimaera. I know this isn't FFG's fault as they're just following the material on screen, but really... The artist and/or producer responsible for this really aught to be ashamed of themselves and their education.

It's a cool bit of artwork and is nice to have an ISD stand out a bit, but wow.

A 'chimaera' is a catch-all term for a blending of any two (usually mythical) animals.

It won't have one particular "look" to it...any mix of parts => chimaera

Actually, look again - its an amalgamation of multiple creatures (that is why it has the insectile mouth in the middle, as well as the hydra-style arms)...

So indeed, befitting the actual definition of a "Chimaera" - a creature composed of the parts of other creatures.

Just not our classic earth ones.

Star Wars ones instead.

It also has another meaning; a creature made from bits of other creatures, I think. And it looks incredible. Huh. Maybe I won’t paint mine.

Also, why does nobody think to snap a shot of the underside?

Another snipe on the same thing??? ...Who are you, and what have you done with Dras? :P

Technically... This is a term from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Thier chimaera is different from our chimaera.

:)

Regardless of small details such as the Chimaera icon, the Rebels artists should be ashamed for the general art-style they use in that series. What lunatic thought this was a good idea:

Hey there is nothing wrong with the giraffe destroyer. All SDs are equal in the eyes of the force. (Inspirational music plays)

I'm always impressed that ships always hyperspace in so that neither side is upside down with respect to the other. That takes planning.

Ermmm... sorry there this may hit a little hard... but Ralph McQuarrie... basically...

There was a convention several centuries ago when the occupants of the universe all got together and decided on a Galactic Standard Down. Helps with this sort of thing.

Did that particular sketch of him end up in the movies? No. Either because he didn't think it worked or perhaps Lucas. Essentially its a failed design, another one (the ISD we know from the movies) was favoured and used. So how does it make in any way sense to then copy the failed design and use that in your new Rebels series?

I hate the giraffe destroyers.

What I don’t understand is why they are shown like that? The SD design is quite clear from the movies. TIEs look the same in Rebels. I don’t get why the SD is different.

I don't care either way, just wanted to point out: it's funny that you have a giraffe star destroyer thingie as your avatar.

Insanity loves company. Don't engage them. It only encourages them. ;)

Well those aren’t just “a sketch”, the giraffe necks are the original concept art of the ISD, which maybe when doing a model just didn’t work out so they had to scratch it? And so without those problems in animation they finally could pay an homage to the original concept and execute the design in an environment where dimensions are a bit weird when compared to the movies anyway (looking at you thin lightsabers and stormtrooper helmets)

Ashamed? Did the artist commit some sin? Did they blaspheme against the sacred image of the Chimaera? Lol!

As others have said a Chimaera is just an amalgamation of different creatures into one. In the case of Star Wars it looks like a creature that is a cross between a serpent and an insect. It doesn't strictly have to be a creature with the head of a lion, a ram and a serpent, animals that do not exist(as far as we know) in the SW universe. Its even spelled differently to suggest that it is different from the creature from our own myth.

The use of artistic license here is valid.

Ralph McQuarrie's designs literally inspired the whole look of Star Wars so I don't see why it's an issue if they chose to honor him through a stylistic interpretation that harkens back to his earlier designs for certain ships, in particular the ISD.

I personally prefer the look of Clone Wars but even that took a little time to get used to. The Rebels look, while not as appealing, is far from terrible.

Now come on everyone, we all know this is what a chimaera looks like

That's the thing - TIEs don't look the same. Their wings are proportionally quite a bit smaller. Again, a nod to McQuarrie's early art.

Other things that are usually brought up - the stormtrooper helmets, and the ultra-thin lightsaber blades.

It's not, though. It is just the Latin spelling from its Greek roots.

Chimera is actually a medical condition. Chimera-ism? Chimerism?

But it's when a single organism has 2 (or more but very unlikely) distinct genetic codes. It's quite common in "litter" critters like cats. What happens is one of the zygotes fuse with another zygote, but they grow together at the same rate. This is the result:

meowingtons cat

So the black side will have different DNA than the the orange side.

TL;DR - I agree with the OP. The picture that was painted is not a chimera since there is no genetic proof. I demand a cat be painted on the ISD instead.

... the condition named for the mythological term..

.. besides, what if the Star Wars version of a Cat IS painted there?
