Is Thweek dead?

By Iceburg2, in X-Wing

I think the mk3 viper was designed for a mindlinking world that was later errated into the ground

I would, however, still be playing xizor quite readily...had they not ****** him with the missiles in the same **** box as his fix

Double fist is such an odd and uniquely Yankee phrase. Down under, we call it double parked. Double fisted implies something more... private, shall we say?

I think that Thweek is a perfectly viable ship in the current meta. He always has the PS to dodge conventional aces - and I've burned down R2-D2 Poe with a 1-hull Thweek. His ability to make it to range 1 of a PS 11 ace out of their arc turn after turn is unparalleled.

His one real weakness is bombs. Specifically Trajectory simulator bombs and infinite bombs. Specifically NyManda (and to a lesser extent DeNym). The question then arises - how to build the rest of a list to both beat NyManda into the ground and have the ability to carry Thweek safely into the endgame against other lists. My proposed solution is:

Asajj Ventress (47)
Lancer-class Pursuit Craft (37), Push the Limit (3), Latts Razzi (2), Glitterstim (2), Shadow Caster (3)

Thweek (32)
StarViper (28), StarViper Mk. II (-3), Autothrusters (2), Virago (1), Fire-Control System (2), Glitterstim (2)

Unkar Plutt (21)
Quadjumper (17), Cikatro Vizago (0), Cloaking Device (2), Spacetug Tractor Array (2)

Totalling 100 points.

Asajj is pretty much standard, albeit without the Countermeasures that allows her to laugh at munitions. There are an awful lot of builds that hate that single stress token a turn.

Unkar is my favourite scum ship to fly, and every single player I've ever versed with him has underestimated his sheer flexibility while cloaked. I've parked two X-wings on a rock with three tractor tokens between them once. He can reach 2 bases beyond range 3 at maximum speed, so literally nowhere is safe from him. Once he swaps the cloaking device he has a great choice between contraband cybernetics and EMP Device. He's also fantastic against aces like Kylo which utterly need 3 defense dice to survive, and aces like miranda who for some reason don't like rocks.

Between the two of them they can fairly reliably nuke aces, tanks and the like. They have the hull to laugh at a few bombs, and the agility/ token stacks to block combined fire.

Thweek has glitterstim, but he can ditch it for a 2 point initiative bid if the meta demands it.

He was always cool.

He was never great.

I'll be honest - when I saw the StarViper Mk II card come out, I was deeply disappointed. Yeah, the funky barrel roll is cute, and a points discount is always welcome, but unless the discount had been ridiculous - and the StarViper had been severely overpriced to begin with, remember - it wasn't going to bring a bunch of mid-PS small based arc-only fighters back into the game anyway. I still kinda wish it had added the Systems slot; this would've made the generics semi-interesting, and the Virago properly intimidating. Broken on a top-tier pilot, of course... but the StarViper didn't have top-tier pilots, and Thweek being EPT-less left him merely 'neat', not 'OMG'.

C'st la vie.

The only good SV pilot is Guri.

Still.

And even then, you have to pay Fenn prices to get her, and she's still PS5. She gets better mods more reliably, but she doesn't hit as hard or stay alive as easily whilst doing so.

I really want the SV to be good but it still kinda sucks :(

Yeah, it's why I wish it had something truly special to differentiate it - being a mid-PS arc-based fighter is pretty much its entire gimmick at this point; it just really wanted to have an extra boost to push it into properly scary.

Double-systems slots being an amusing example, albeit only one of the possibilities.

The Triple SV list that made top 4 at Indiana Regionals inspires hope that the SV (and, I suppose, Thweek) is not dead. Just have to git gud

That player intentionally avoided Thweek because of the lack of EPT. Did you watch the Gold Squadron video of his match vs Quad wookies? If you want to see some arc dodging mastery watch what he does to to those poor wookies. It was a thing of beauty. But it was only possible by being able to work both the BR + Boost in many situations.

I've been flying Mindlink Fenn and Guri alongside Thweek with both titles, and its been amazingly fun. List comes in at 96 points ha.

Im about 15-6 with it (including going 3-3 in a regional due to a few questionable choices in the games I lost).

And I've never stolen an ability once with him :D

Quality list, I might pinch it.

literally everyone i come across that dislikes Thweek are the same people that go "Why would you ever take the ability? Take the PS, always and every time!"

Yet the people, like my friend and i, that virtually never take the PS absolutely adore the bugger.

If anything killed him off its the influx of bad abilities AND ps for him to copy. Gunboats are all over, which are PS4 or worse 99% of the time and have no ability (or ability that thweek can even use). Most comical thing i did was i ran my Deathboats list against my friend and he went "...wait...theres nothing for thweek...i cant use Deathrain's ability and the Rho's have none....wow...i guess he effectively has VI?" lol

Thweek is just waiting for the Starviper Only Harpoon Torpedo with built in reload action to finally rise to the top of the meta.

Or the Scum Only , 3 dice x 2, range 2-3, Twin Laser Torpedo Turret.

Or the Illicit upgrade "Illegal R2D2", which is just R2D2 in the Illicit slot.

I still want an illicit upgrade "Hacked": if you have a red target lock on your ship, you may use it as a blue target lock and reverse the color of the corresponding target lock in play.

I guess I need to win world's or something.

We played the adventure The Long Arm Of The Hutt last night.

Yes, Thweek is dead.

(Although thank god for the players that he doesn't turn up in a starviper...)

A friend of mine made me a double sided Thweek card to cover exactly this situation...

Feel free ;)

Fenn Rau — Protectorate Starfighter 28
Attanni Mindlink 1
Autothrusters 2
Concord Dawn Protector 1
Ship Total: 32

Guri — StarViper 30
Attanni Mindlink 1
Autothrusters 2
StarViper Mk. II -3
Ship Total: 30

Thweek — StarViper 28
Flechette Torpedoes 2
Fire-Control System 2
Glitterstim 2
Autothrusters 2
StarViper Mk. II -3
Virago 1
Ship Total: 34
List Total:96

There are a few other options, such as contraband cybernetics instead of glitterstim, or a seismic on Guri instead of a flechette on Thweek.

The list generally revolves around Fenn charging in an nuking something valuable before he dies (which he almost always does), then Guri and Thweek dance around the rest of the squad.

I've also seen a very similar list with ptl on Fenn and intensity on Guri, but I like having the whole dial open to Fenn (plus it lets me have that flechette torp for anti ace security).
